I love the entire Scarred Heart series!

MUST.HAVE.MORE.CALE. I love the entire Scarred Heart series and I feed my one-click addiction every time a new one is released. This short story was enough to fulfill my need for more of these characters while waiting for the next full length novel, but also to make me want to read more of Leela and Cale! This was a sweet, fun, romantic, quick read!

A gift from the North Sea

Margrét Helgadóttir is a Norwegian-Icelandic writer and editor who burst onto the scene in 2012.

I’m very pleased I read The Stars Seem So Far Away, since it handles the acidification of the oceans and famines and droughts of a changed climate from the viewpoint of where those who can flee the wars, famines, plagues and destruction will go: north. For a book with such a grim backdrop and horrific chaos, it’s surprisingly positive and hopeful. The human touch is lovingly supplied by showing things in the points of view of surviving children, a lonely outpost with a single female protector, a woman who scavenges the ships of the dead, a retired astronaut, and other hardy or lucky folks who all funnel into a satisfying conclusion that wraps back into the title and theme.

This is a post apocalyptic book that can either be viewed as a set of standalone, themed short stories (some were published as shorts) or named chapters in a novel. It clocks in at just under 40K words, so it’s a novella. Read it yourself and see if it’s not one of the more worthy offerings at that length.

Distinctive and different

If The Stars Seem So Far Away comes across as quite fragmented, that's because the book started out as a series of (initially) unconnected short stories. But that fragmentation actually ends up being a key theme - the characters themselves are fragmented, the Earth is in pieces, and humanity is scattered across the stars. Zaki, Nora, Bjorg and the rest of the book's small cast are left behind, damaged and incomplete, and their individual journeys across the dying Earth reflect that - there are few place names, geographic leaps between chapters, isolation more often than not. Margret Helgadottir resists the temptation to allow her characters to solves great problems, find easy answers, and thus lay out her world to the reader; instead her characters are often mystified by what they find and by what goes on around them, indicating that technology, history and knowledge are all ephemeral.
Another distinctive and different voice from Fox Spirit Books - well worth your time.

Simply brilliant

Note: I read this in advance of release.
Ostensibly a collection, but so seamlessly woven into the fabric of the author's post-apocalyptic world to be a novel; this is a magical account of the survivors and their lives in the now (the now that is after the world changed). Some of it is struggle, and there is certainly hardship - but more of it is of adaptability, ingenuity, passion and curiosity for the unexplored horizon and the possibilities that the new future holds.

Echoed in the writing - the Nordic strands of culture and lore flow from the author, and you are steadily carried along the strands of the tales as they intertwine, and ultimately meet all the characters in a fabulous and hopeful ending.

I have read several short stories - mainly of the intrepid Nora - from this story before; but this debut outing in long format showcases the sublime talent and new approach the author brings: a tantalising mix of Icelandic lore, impish humour, grand futuristic vision (a sci-fi approach to fantasy, if you will), and a bevy of characters who aren't afraid to be imperfect.

And the cover... it matches the story for epic quality!

"Trumpets Will Fill the Sky" by Poet and short story writer R. A. McColley is a plethora of delightful forbidden pleasures. How can so many unique genres flow from one creative imagination? Mind-blowing to us mere mortals. "Trumpets" are blaring across the Universe and down from Mount Olympus, seeping up from the ground in the darkness of evil fantasy and horror. Sensitive, spiritual questions beg to be answered: "Who Am I? Why am I here? What am I? Where am I?"

Beauty with the richness of Poe. Depth with the superconsciousness of Freud and Jung. Realism in all its depression, elation, derangement, and the sensuality of dreams. Fantasy with things that go bump in the night, partake of your blood, or soar unparalleled in delicate colors across the heavens. Trumpets will herald a new beginning or doom the evolution of mankind. The paradox paradigm.

Trumpets Will Fill The Sky, R.A. McColley’s first collection of verse and short stories, contemplates the human dilemmas of heart and spirit. McColley is blessed with the gift of rhyme as well as a keen ability to observe the effects of beauty and ignorance and inspire the reader to truly experience life. McColley is an artist who paints rare and exceptional portraits with his quill, and the content of his verses is highly relatable. While I enjoyed the entire collection, my favourite poems, due to either content or his words' visual images, were Still Waters “avoiding conflict daily finding peace within our hell, life is like an open ocean screaming from a shell”, The Joy of Sadness “sadness my dearest friend in solitude, a dear one of caring when I’m not in the mood, always to show me and never is rude, sweet song in life my darling brief interlude”, and Watercolor “I let the colors blur over the page, they drip off to the edges blending and bleeding, the brush moves water like filling the crevices.” I highly recommend this collection and am anxious for McColley’s forthcoming title.

I bought this book after I heard the author refer to his writings on The Young Turks YouTube channel. As The Young Turks deals with pop culture and news, I was not expecting this book to be fiction. Instead, I was hoping for the author’s insightful comments on an important topic. That was my fault; I did not read the book description before buying.
As a short story, it’s not too bad. There are too many grammar mistakes for my liking, but the story is a quick short read set in an interesting future where the world’s big powers, on the precipice of all-out-war, are colonizing the moon. Although the book was not what I was expecting, I do not think that it was a waste of time or money ($0.99).

About the Author
George Williams was born in Dublin, Ireland, and served in the civil service of the British government at Dublin Castle. He ministered throughout Ireland and Europe, where his proficiency in French, German, Italian, and Spanish allowed him to preach directly to the people. Following his retirement, Williams devoted the remaining twenty years of his life to biblical study.

LAUGHTER IN A VERY DARK ALLEY

Each time George Williams has a new book, I rush to it like a helium balloon rushes to the sky!
His short stories are gems in a dark corner of a darker alley's imagination: bizarrerie with perfect cut, shape, and
unforgettable shadow. Like great bizarrerie, his vision is also oddly skewed and insane in its humor: think Poe, Dunsany, the more
sentimental moments of James Ellroy, and you've an idea of the incomprehensibly elegant shifts of Williams'
work.
Reading the work late at night can be chilling. I admit to such shivers. Reading it at full Savannah noon, where I live, makes me look over my shoulder, no matter the jasmine and tea blossoms in the air.
And like all writing worth the event, he is a writer always worth re-reading.

Wonderful collection of minimalism done well, the common tale with a fine twist

The back cover of this new collection from Williams (Gardens of Earthly Delight) has a blurb of praise from Library Journal saying that he “…shows a darkly comic sensibility more akin to that of the filmmaking Coen brothers…than to more obvious literary influences…” and I agree that this describes his work excellently.

Each of the stories in The Valley of Happiness and Other Stories take a setup or core plot that seems very familiar, classical even in the American landscape of storytelling, but then gives it a tweak into some direction surreal, absurd, or just plain weird. Dialogue spoken with ‘straight man’ seriousness sounds slightly comic, unfamiliar in the surrounding situation.

For instance, the opening story “Striper” begins as a quiet tale of friends fishing, and a sudden tremendous haul of a gigantic fish that seemingly shatters all known records. The folky nature of the story is drawn into the realms of the fantastic, the unusual by the size of the fish, and phone calls from scientific institutions wanting to examine and preserve it. But Williams will take things some steps further, the fish speaking, and the fisherman who caught him struck with novel feelings and needs leading to his physical transformation and refuge in the waves.

“Dummy” deals with a ventriloquist and his dummy who go on a rampage of crime and destruction. The creepiness of the ventriloquist dummy (or dolls in general) have appeared in thrillers and horrors on small screen, large screen, and in print for long enough that it is a common trope. But Williams looks at things again slightly off kilter, in the minimalism of his text not stating outright who these people are, what the dummy is, but linking it into the psychology of the man.

The minimalism of Williams writing is one of the things that I loved most about his stories in his last collection. In this he continues that mastery of staccato dialogue and bare-bones evocative description. Yet, it is also apparent from a couple of the stories that he can do flowery just as well, particularly with “The Bay of Drake”.

With this story Williams seems to have skewing both the story AND his characters into comic absurdity. Narrated by a member of explorer Francis Drakes’ crew, the story is written in a more antiquated and verbose style than all the others. We soon find that the crew has come ashore to California of modern day, with an invitation to a party for ‘play boys’ hosted by one ‘Huey Heifer’. The juxtaposition of the older with the modern, the uncertainty of whether Drake’s men have been lost in time or if they are just method actors REALLY devoted to their role, the calash of modern culture through the eyes of a more repressed age… they all play here to highlight the best of Williams even absent the minimalism.

Other stories here range from social commentary (“Slave for a Day”) to violently disturbing (“Ginny Shay”) to bizarrely empowering (“Beestings”), while others court closely to the literary focus on relationships (“The Valley of Happiness”) or a Bonnie-and-Clyde-esque genre crime story (“Wabash”). At approximately a quarter length shorter than his previous collection Gardens of Earthly Delight, I actually enjoyed this one more, just the right amount of this style for me without it losing its potency.

Almost like a full season of the Twilight Zone episodes.

Wow, such a wide variety of interests and obsessions are displayed in these 14 short stories. Williams reveals an extremely observant mindset as he delves into the geographically disperse settings and the colloquial conversations of his characters. In some sense his rich descriptions reminds me on Tom Wolf. But Williams' stories are not so easy to categorize - which is good. Some stories border on fairy tale, some on legend, sometimes surreal, sometimes sci-fi, sometimes gore, sometimes Pulp Fiction, and sometimes Penthouse Forum. After finishing his book,I feel like I've watched an entire season of the Twilight Zone - an adult version.
Despite the wide range of topics and characters, Williams' contemporary writing style links them together. His stories usually are quite conversational including a well done but odd old English style language in the story "The Bay of Drake," features a Hugh Heffner character twist.
Overall this book present an entertaining and varied set of short stories taking the reader to places and meeting people that are in one sense are very contemporary, but in another sense other-worldly.

A fun read

This anthology of YA shorts contains several really well written pieces. Some are clearly amateurish and unpolished, which you might expect given that it is an anthology of "unknown writers". I purchased the paperback and it also allowed me to download the kindle version for free, which was nice (it had one or two format errors though). The writeup in the back cover was hilarious. A short, fun read, and I have a feeling one or two of the writers in the book will go on to do some very good things in the YA literary world.

Es un muy buen libro para entender las costumbres como así también la forma de pensar de las diferentes clases sociales de Rusia en la época en que se escribieron las obras, recomiendo leer previamente la biografía del autor, y un libro titulado "El misterio de Olga Chejova" donde se describe bien a la familia del autor.
