About the Author
Doris Plantus is the middle daughter of an immigrant carpenter from Bucovina, and mother, whose family emigrated from Banat, Romania. She has enjoyed living in two languages and cultures her whole life, and attributes her many creative undertakings to her bilingual and bicultural experiences growing up in Detroit, Michigan. She put herself through graduate school working a variety of jobs while raising two sons, and earned her Ph.D in English, with a concentration in translation and adaptation studies. Her characteristic archaic and regionalist style in Romanian prose and poetry is a point of pride for her devoted preservation of the language she inherited and passed on to her own children. Currently she teaches a variety of courses in English at Oakland University, with a specialty in Bible as Literature. But her real passion is exploring meaning through expression, from bilingual writing, painting, iconography, sculpture, and music, to stargazing, building tree forts with her father’s tools, and making wine. She lives in Troy, Michigan.

A thought provoking read

The book is a good read. Thought provoking read. Opens up a thought process of legacy, reality, the desire to return to what we know and have experienced but then realize that time does not allow us to go back. What a boring life we would all lead if we did not venture out taking charge of time instead of letting time control us. I would recommend it

In Book XX of “Sihastrul”, the author, Doris Catherine Plantus specifies that the writing of an apocryphal tale “gives it truth, and if not truth, then meaning. Sometimes meaning makes all the difference,” the author tells us.
“Sihastrul” invites us to uncover the meanings hidden within its pages and its unconventional characters. One cannot help but sense the author’s appreciation of the depth and complexity of the characters’ emotions as well as for their exceptionality: the Hermit, the Angel, God himself, the butterfly, the young woman for whom the words are carved -“because you seek meaning in all the things” (book XVIII, page 87), etc. There is a warm familiarity infused with love in the way the characters introduce themselves and connect with each other: “But when she opened her eyes and saw the Hermit huddled a short distance away, back against the cave wall, knees drawn to chest and chin resting on folded arms, she felt a solidarity soothe her spirit like a warm and welcomed balm. “Who are you?” “I am the Hermit of this cave.” “What is your name?” (Book XVIII, page 86).
At times, the reader is stopped in his tracks by a meditation that can elicit immediate existential musings about his own life: “Some strive for heaven, others for the center of the earth; some search for the beginning of time, others for infinity. Some say the soul guides us, others claim forces of nature decide our fate. It was in this fashion the Hermit contemplated the young woman who lay sleeping on the cave floor.” (Book XVIII, page 86)
In some of these apocryphal tales, one emergence determines another, which in turns precipitates the fate of other elements, a creative domino effect of a primordial life whose phenomena sprout from a rich imagination, knowledge, and memories, “The tip of the Angel’s feather pushed forth slowly, firmly and sprouted in its unanimous solitude, glistening with toil and longing. Eventually, a tiny bud broke in the figure of an incandescent tear and salted the Earth with oceans of wisdom and remorse. Quickly new down gathered around the broken bud and there a single flower blossomed in consolation. The flower unfolded as it grew and grew, nodding to the eons that regarded it in passing, but did not wither, not even when it bent the feather clear to the ground. …” (Book IV, page 29)
Eighteenth Century author, William Blake once said: “The Tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a Green thing that stands in the way. Some see Nature all Ridicule and Deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the Man of Imagination, nature is Imagination itself.” In order to connect to the cosmic dimensions and the uniqueness of the characters on which her book is based, Ms. Plantus entices the readers to make use of their own imagination and interpretation (the book is abundant with elements of the author’s rich imagination, knowledge and sensibility flavored with Romanian customs and places).
Many of the elements encountered in the book – the finger with a “signed branded on its tip”, the stalagmite’s drop, the spindle, the spike, the apple, the icon, the seed of knowledge, etc., become important symbols of life’s significant encounters, and we witness their imaginative transformation into things or places endeared to the Hermit and the author: “We sailed on the periwinkle oceans beneath a cerulean sky, but the very air we breathed as we neared the Great Band was now Voronet blue. And the sea for us became a monastery of wonder and wisdom, and the salt was sorrow.”(Book VIII, page 42).
The Hermit’s profession seems to weight heavy on the world firmament: he “mines words,” chiseling them on the cave walls. And don’t words play a huge role in the big picture of life? Words can elevate like music or can hurt like hell; they can give wings or destroy dreams, bring peace or start wars, imbue love or mine it, etc. However, the final word between the girl and the Hermit is also the first one - “Love”: “The Hermit’s heart began to fill with hope and substance, swelling with the very first word from which all the other words come. And the girl saw the Hermit’s chest rise and fall in perfect concert with her own. And God sigh(NAI)ed. And the mountain slept. And the world forgave.”
In his isolation and solitude, and his consciousness of his role in the dialectic of the surrounding world, the character of the Hermit displays a certain solitary, poetic nature similar to that expressed by the 20th century Romanian literary critic and poet , Vladimir Streinu. Here is an excerpt from Vladimir Streinu’s poem “Sunset” (in original “Inserare”):

“And the soul under the rich load Tonight, so deep, so late a night
Of the night descending upon it, Where is the solitary hollow
Folds itself in and bends again, In whose profoundness I listen
A snail in its calcareous labyrinth. To the eternity I carry whole,
Like in a shell the seas stormy tumult?”

In original:
“Si sufletul sub spornica povara In noapte-aceasta prea tarzie
A noptii care-n juru –mi se coboara, Unde e scorbura pustie
Se-aduce-n el si se-ncovoaie iar Si-adanca-n care-ascult
Ca melcu-n labirintul de calcar. Cum duc intreaga vesnicie
Ca intr-o scoic-al marilor tumult?”

“…the very seed of sin which, heavy as it was with knowledge burrowed through the firmament and fell in turn to root its place in the universe.” (Book IV, page 28). Just like the “seed of sin,” Ms. Plantus’ first book, “Sihastrul” burrows through the firmament of sensitive readers whose imagination and knowledge invite challenge. And this “first seed” is expected to produce more “sprouts” with the next book of the series, as promised by the author. (Review by Mihaela Bartoi)

Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She worked as a photographer during the Depression and published her first book, a collection of short stories, in 1941. In addition to short fiction, Welty wrote novels, novellas, essays, and reviews, and was the winner of both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. By the time of her death in 2001, Welty had established herself as one of the most important and beloved American writers of the twentieth century.

About the Author

Eudora Welty's long list of memorable novels and short stories includes A Curtain of Green, The Wide Net, The Golden Apples, The Bride of Innisfallen, Delta Wedding, The Ponder Heart, and Losing Battles. She was awarded the 1972 Pulitzer for Fiction for The Optimist's Daughter. Ms. Welty died in 2001 at the age of 92.

Barbara Rosenblat is a multi-award-winning voice actor for audiobooks. On Broadway, she created the role of 'Mrs. Medlock' in 'The Secret Garden'.

This grand matriarch of Southern Writer Tradition was first discovered, praised and published by luminaries such as Robert Penn Warren when he was coeditor of The Southern Review, Edward Weeks when he was editor of The Atlantic Monthly, and Mary Louise Aswell, when she was fiction editor of Harper's Bazaar.
This collection of stories is truly worthy to be called a classic. It is sometimes tedious reading, because the stories and characters are complex. After a number of false starts over a period of years, I finally resolved to give this scholarly work the focused time and attention it deserves, and feel richly rewarded for the effort.
Ms. Welty joins the ranks of great writers who prove to us that a great writer does not have to live the experience to effectively write about it. She leaps with ease between characters as diverse as Aaron Burr, a deaf black servant boy, a traveling salesmen, eccentric Southern matrons, and countless others. She portrays them in all of their complexities as if she had lived the experiences of each. Her descriptions of scenes and settings are equally as lucid and believable as if she had first hand knowledge of each. This rare and precious gift is best described in her own words, "I have been told, both in approval and accusation, that I seem to love all of my characters. What I do in writing of any character is to try to enter into the mind, heart, and skin of a human being who is not myself. Whether this happens to be a man or a woman, old or young, with skin black or white, the primary challenge lies in making the jump itself. It is the act of a writer's imagination that I set most high."

Master of the Short Story.

For those who want to jump-start their introduction to southern literature, this is as fine a beginning point as you will find anywhere. The prose is so richly drawn that it feels like poetry, and the images in "A Curtain of Green" and "A Still Moment" will take your breath away. You have to slow down to savor every carefully crafted sentence. Very highly recommended.

Goddess of Love well worth it!

Book 2 in the series picks up where Eros and Chloe left off with their bet for Chloe to show Eros that his job is "easy" and that she is can easily succeed. While the continuous story between Eros and Chloe add to the stories, they can be read individually.
Being a goddess of love, Parvati knew what is was to feel love and even more how it felt not to have that love. She was constantly looking for love but it didn't seem to be the right one at the right time. So she use that motivation to make her company of helping others find love, a very successful.
Colin. A computer geek. Single and his mother's only hope to any grandchildren. She pushes and plans anything and everything possible to have him come in contact with as many single women as possible. Colin just seems to be more interested in figuring out the next break in a hacked system than marriage.
That is until he meets Parvati. There is instant attraction, followed by a lot of misunderstanding. But the two seem to be trying to fight what they felt. Colin comes to work for Parvati to help with her computer system hack and get her company up and running before Valentines Day.
When Colin and Parvati give into their feelings it is something that happens quickly. They don't mention what would happen in the future and they live in the moment. That leaves them both wondering where they will be left.
As I mentioned, this is the 2nd book in the series. It can be read as a stand alone, but I would recommend going in order. The main story with Parvati and Colin progressed in a short period, but it didn't feel too rushed. It gave the story time.
Their supporting characters were also very involved in their story and they made the story fun. Parvati's cousin was just the perfect amount of mischief and calm to compliment Parvati.
I truly enjoyed this story especially the banter between Chloe and Eros. They are definitely a story within a story, for now and I look forward to the end result for these two.

A descendant of the Goddess of Love and Devotion, Parvati Shiva helps others find their other half but can’t seem to do so for herself and then a hacker shuts down her business and… well who knew Geeky could be so hot in this delightful paranormal romance.

Colin starts off on the wrong foot with the beautiful woman he’s instantly attracted to and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the fiery sparks flying in all directions when this case of mistaken identity gets the blood pumping and scorching desires burning out of control which really spices things up and Parvati’s cousin add his own spicy action to the story as well with some sizzling sex with his man. These strong characters easily hold readers hostage throughout their story while the fast paced plot keeps readers shivering in anticipation.

Once again, Brandy Walker spins a wonderful and delightful romance with just the right amount passion and fantasy while keeping the readers ensnared with the additional story unfolding between Eros and Chloe as they contribute their own tension and excitement and I can’t wait to read the next story in this fascinating series.

It keep getting better!

Parvati is the second book in the Mystic Zodiac series. The series starts with a bet between Eros, the God of love & desire, and Chloe (Chlotho), the Fate of birth, in which he challenges her to make a love match per month for a year, the second of them being Parvati and Colin.
For starters, I have to say that I really loved reading this story. Like the first in this series, it manages to be sexy and sweet all at the same time, something that I greatly value in a book. Parvati and Colin have mad chemistry right from the start, but they want more from the other than just sex.
I’m really into intelligent men, so apart from Colin’s “open-mouth-insert-foot” moment at the beginning, I thought he was a pretty great hero. I also really appreciate independent and intelligent heroines and Parvati is plenty of both. I love how Colin is not only not threatened by Parvati’s confidence, but also turned on by it.
In the meantime, Eros and Chloe’s story arc continues to get hotter and hotter! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Most math wasn't even in the actual test

I took the PERT a few days ago. I was surprised to see that most of it was stuff I had reviewed from free practice tests online. However, I don't even remember anything from the study guide being on the test. I dare say that NONE (with the exception of probably one or two of the easiest problems ever, that I already knew) of it was on the real test. So, I don't recommend this. I had to hire a tutor to help me solve some questions because they didn't even give an explanation for the math part. Some answers were wrong! (The reciprocal of cosine is not cosecant!)

If you want to buy, it's fine. There is some extra information that might come in handy, in case you get different questions than I do. But I am very dissapointed because they didn't even reply my email . I want my money back!!!!

P.S for students taking the PERT, there are many online practice tests that were way more helpful than this. If you'd like links or help on this study guide that didn't give the explanations for the answers, contact me! ^-^

A Lifetime or a Season is a story most women today should be able to relate to. The games people play, relationships, and making life-changing decisions- it's all in there.

This is the third novelette I've read by Maria Gibbs, and I really love her writing style. She certainly has a way with words, and she pulls the reader into the main character in a very personal manner. I highly recommend As Dreams Are Made On, my favorite of the three I've read so far, and I do hope this author will continue to write these relatable and beautifully written stories.

My daughter loved the flash card system

I received this product at a discount price for my honest review. I ordered this for my daughter and my niece who are in medical school. My daughter took step 1 but is preparing for step 2 and was able to use some of the content for her study. My niece will be taking step 1 this year and will be able to use it. My daughter loved the flash card system. Great content.
