Great insight into Victorian writing style

It is apparent that the great detective Allan Pinkerton had a "Ghost Writer," but both his personal and business life were better than fiction. However, he does reveal to the reader quite bit about his first female detective, Kate Warne and what she contributed to the Pinkerton Detective Agency. This story reminded me of several Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes adventures, except Pinkerton's stories were based on facts.

With her first publication, Carla Golian masterfully crafts a book of 19 poems, weaving them through 13 short stories to tell the tale of a Grand Love.

Melodic and mystical, these tales of passion and romance will fascinate us and show us the ecstasies and agonies of Love, and the courage and risk required to follow our Dreams.

Completely different writing styles complement each other beautifully to form a flow of positive consciousness that is sure to brighten anyone's day. The poetry in here was the absolute best to delve into. The romance poet in this book really knows her romance.

Mostly, this is beautiful creative writing with a sensual theme. There is a nurturing quality to the lust, a beautiful connection between souls and an almost spiritual element in the union of lovers in a comforting embrace and heartfelt connection.

I found many of these poems were dipped in pleasure, but still retained an element of comfort. This is the type of book you can read at night before you go to bed and it may even produce beautiful dreams of the person you love.

She is a master at creating stories around life's human experiences of hopes, dreams, disappointments, regret, and tragedy. She writes through the eyes and ears of each of her characters with clarity and vision.

Ok, not great

I purchased this for my homeschooled 1st grader, and it useful for students who will eventually be placed in public school later in life. If you plan on homeschooling all through until graduation don't use this workbook. The re-tale stories questions are confusing because many of the stories are written in first person. Making main character questions more difficult to answer. This workbook provides more practice for skills your student may be having trouble in . Plus you prepare your child for textbooks based on common core, which is why I said it good for students who will eventually join others in public school. It also helps provide a pace for parents new to homeschooling. I wouldn't base your entire curriculum around this book, but its a good supplement for what you may lack. The math portions just adds extra practice if you need it. Use this workbook sparingly.

A VERY AMUSING SHORT STORY

This almost qualifies as a parable rather than a parody. Most reading it will identify with poor Mister Nobody and both relish when things go right for him and agonize when they don’t. You are, quite rightly in my opinion, left wondering whether he will ever get his life on track until the end. The idea of not giving the characters normal names was a good one.

I have to admit, I was quite confused reading about Nobody, Somebody, Everybody and Anybody. I thought of actually changing the names of the characters to something more proper, but where's the fun in that? I decided to go ahead and finish this parody story and at the end of the day, I'm glad I made that decision.

Nobody seems to have a depressing state of life, what with his dissatisfaction at work, unbecoming relationship with his mother, everyday tirade with the Guard who ruined his marriage, and constant comparison with Somebody's success. When Nobody learned about Somebody's continuing progress and successful venture at Body Odor Inc, Nobody decided to get a grip, learn from the best and improve himself. It wasn't long until changes happened to Nobody and Anybody was concerned. While Nobody had achieved what Somebody has accomplished, there was that feeling of discontentment that overshadowed him. Would Nobody ever find a loophole in his success? Will Somebody remain his friend and mentor? Will Anybody ever learn to trust him?

Magus Tor impressed me with this parody story. I loved how Mr. Nobody had become the kind of person he wanted to be, but still was able to recognize his wrongs and learn from it. This kind of story moves me in a hilarious kind of way. Nobody deserves the attention he's getting now from me. Somebody's gotta learn to go with the flow and Anybody can be the supportive one if she wants to. This parody deserves a 5-star ranking for its wit, enigma, creativity and ingenuity. A round of applause for Magus Tor!!!

About the Author
Margaret Cullingford, Mags to her friends, lives in Leicestershire, England with her partner and a temperamental tortoiseshell cat. When Calista’s husband Adam left his wife for her she felt on top of the world but several months later, now married to him herself, she wonders if she has made a huge mistake. Adam, domineering and demanding, is not the man she thought he was and not only that she has to ask herself if he is being as faithless to her as he was his ex-wife. When she meets his daughters for the first time his eldest daughter Helen makes a few comments about her father which make Cal even more doubtful about his motives for marrying her and she begins to fear she is just there for his convenience and love wasn’t involved at all. Meanwhile, a chance encounter on Ithaca on holiday leads to a whole new set of problems for her, ones she could not have even begun to imagine and yet there is a silver lining in the form of an elusive man who puts her world in heightened perspective.

Margaret Cullingford weaves a tale based mainly around Calista but with an equally appealing side story of her university friends Tess and Mike who married each other and now have misunderstandings of their own. Calista’s story is one of ‘look before you leap’ in many ways as she ends up being married to a man she didn’t really know or understand whilst caught up in the throes of a romance with him which at the time seemed true and engaging. Calista is a strong, professional woman and very likable, despite her naivety over her husband. Their holiday on the beautiful island of Ithaca is the catalyst when Adam crosses a line no man should and takes what he wants but comfort for Calista in the form of PJ Woods is hovering on the horizon and she must decide what she wants to do about him. PJ’s job can be a dangerous one but when her emails go unanswered she wonders whether she should worry for his safety or just assume she has been let down once again.

I loved the settings of this story; the beauty of the island of Ithaca shines through and the wonderful house in the country sounds just the ticket to me too although for Calista, used to the bright lights of the City, it was more of a comfortable prison than a luxurious abode as the reality hits her that her husband is not all he seems in many ways when his own nocturnal activities in London come to light and it is worse than even she could have imagined.

Bearing in mind the saying ‘marry the mistress and you create a vacancy,’ Cal begins to wonder if she has made a mistake marrying her lover Adam Burgess, especially as he spends so much time pursuing his city career in London while she’s stuck in the Leicestershire countryside. Fortunately, she has her own career as the hot-shot company lawyer, Calista Blake, and the company of a doting spaniel, Beppo. Her doubts are only increased when she learns the real reason for his divorce from his first wife and that he wanted to provide a home – and a stepmother – for his two teenage daughters. While on holiday with Adam, she meets roving photographer PJ Wood. The two fall instantly in love but their meetings are all too brief. There is an obvious outcome to their liaison which forces Cal to take action to the satisfactory conclusion of all concerned.

I became totally involved in all the characters of this compelling romantic drama as they all discover more about themselves. Even Adam who I hated at first, matures and begins to take responsibility for his actions. The two daughters are a delight and so accurately portrayed while Calista herself, from being emotionally naïve becomes a more rounded person. I loved the story and look forward to more of Ms Cullingford’s insightful novels.

Mags Cullingford has apparently been described as a writer of grown-up books for grown-up people.
Twins of a Gazelle certainly confirms that opinion. ( I wasn't familiar with the title. Ms Cullingford obviously is, but she doesn''t show off about it!)
Lawyer Calista Blake, now married to the man with whom she's had a long-term affair, is beginning to suspect that she's made a terrible mistake. Does Adam, now her husband, subscribe to the premise - marry your mistress, you create a vacancy? Perhaps a holiday in the sun will erase her anxieties.
The story moves and develops between Leicester, London and the magical Greek Island of Ithaca. The author could write for their tourist boards. She has a wonderful sense of place. Descriptions of sights,scents, sounds and colours are wonderfully drawn - first sketched, then coloured in. On Ithaca, 'unrelenting cicadas, sea on shingle, scent of herbs and pine' - and a salade nicoise that had my mouth watering.
Throughout the novel, Calista's story is cleverly interwoven with that of her friend, Tess and her own troubled relationship.

Lost In Translation sounded exactly like I think it is : amazing, exciting and beautiful. I was happy to read about my capitale city and I found in this book everything I love in Paris. I gave 4 stars (4.5) because I would have loved to read more about this gripping and moving love story. But don't worry, I was completely satisfied ! Here are the reasons why you need to read Lost In Translation :

"The French are definitly not shy about showing their affection in public. Is everyone in this city in love?"

First, I laughed a lot ! I loved seeing Paris through an American girl's eyes. Even more because I liked Kandace a lot. She and I have things in common but she's also a very touching character. I could relate on what she was experiencing and I found every word realistic and right. It never felt too much : you get romance, hotness mixed with tenderness and you walk in Paris almost like Kandace does. I think it's kind of amazing to be able to make me, a French reader "used" to the beauty of Paris, fall in love with this city all over again. So I'm sure any reader can feel it too !

"His expression coats my insides, making me wonder if it's possible to fall in love with someone in less than forty eight hours. Maybe anything is possible in Paris. It is the most romantic rcity in the world after all."

Olivier DeMarche : I found this book boyfriend so charming, endearing and complex. I love him ! Read the story through his POV would have been amazing too. He has secrets and a complicated history... It didn't prevent me from falling for him. He is also very hot and appétissant !
And what about this connexion, this beautiful attraction between Olivier and Kandace? I loved it a lot ! I wanted to know when they would go for it and, of course, where it would lead them.

"You bring out the person I want to be."

The two of them had chemistry at the first smile Olivier gave and the reader can feel it too. He is warm and cocky, she's a bit down to earth and serious. But they affect each other perfectly, like they can complete the other.

So here you have a perfect holiday fantasy !

"I hope my feet never touch the ground. I love living a dream."

But when Kandace realizes it's more than just sex and Paris' beauty affecting her, it's too late. She's falling for a guy she barely knows, a guy she'd love to know more. Everything is complicated, tempting... But when one of Olivier' secrets is revealed, for Kandace, going back home doesn't seem wrong anymore...

I think I told you pretty much everything you need to know about Lost In Translation and I hope you want to read it too ! This is a page turner, a fast read you'd enjoy like you enjoy a good romance movie (I can't help but thinking about Notting Hill and Love in the Afternoon by Billy Wilder (1957) ) It's well written, characters are awesome and love is everywhere in this book ! I'm absolutly going to check S. L Scott other books and tell you about them !

S.L. Scott has done it again with this holiday novella. A relatable heroine, a Paris fling, and a sexy French guy? That’s all I need. Out of all S.L. Scott’s characters, Kandace is probably the one I relate to most. And that only made the reading experience more enjoyable. It’s hard to find likeable heroines these days. She thinks she has her life all mapped out, but she can’t oppress her spontaneity. She ends up in Paris for her birthday before she has to go on with the rest of her planned life. What she doesn’t expect (and what we all dream of) is to meet Olivier. Olivier oozes sexuality and confidence, but with all that comes danger—the danger of falling for him and his French accent. They share a room at the hostel Kandace stays at. Their attraction and sexual chemistry can’t be denied. And since this is a novella, it doesn’t take long for them to give in to their desires. Thank god, because they are off the charts hot. But, what happens when it’s time for Kandace to go back to the U.S.? It’s more than whether or not she should stay with Olivier. It’s whether or not she should go back to her life where she risks going through empty motions or staying in Paris with Olivier and getting to live a life colored in love. There’s more to this little story than the cute characters, the sexy scenes, and the Paris theme. My only complaint is that I want more. More, more, and more. Always.

Francophiles Beware!

This was a quick read, but so many details took me out of the story and had me shaking my head in disbelief. It made the heroine come across as not too bright on a lot of levels. There are really basic things to do and to avoid in travel. They are really easy to learn through articles, books, or travel shows on TV. She's supposed to be a college student, so I could not believe she was that unprepared for a place it was such a big deal for her to visit. The length of the trip reminded me of National Lampoon's Vacation, where the father goes to the Grand Canyon, looks at it for a few seconds, then gets back in the car. Why bother getting out? My fellow high school students learned better as teenagers. We saved for two years, and went for two weeks. We used the language skills learned part-time while we were saving up, so that we wouldn't get lost (or worse) in a foreign country.

Of course, this is a romance with a happy ending, but it could have been more realistic with a less clueless heroine and still been good. As it is, I can only recommend this as cautionary tale. It is a lesson in how not to visit a major city in a country where you do not speak the language.

Titillation with a sledgehammer

Really wanted too like this, but it just was not happening. The last one was a little better than the first two. I could detect some talent but definitely needs more work maybe try a change in theme to hide his misogynist feelings.
