Daughter loved this study guide...

I bought this study guide for my daughter who had to retake the Biology test. She loved it. The book is about 65 pages long, soft cover, but large size (8 1/2 x 11"). The study guide only covers the items that are tested on the Staar biology exam. My daughter didn't have to study all the other stuff.

The book does not have any practice test, but does have an iPhone app with practice questions that we bought for 99 cents.

To celebrate the launch of Short Story Day Africa’s latest anthology, I revisited the stories that I’d previously judged together with Samuel Kolawole (Writers’ Studio, Ibadan) and Jared Shurin (Jurassic London). Fortunately, I had already marked splendid passages in some of the stories, and it wasn’t difficult to lift striking excerpts from all the others. Hopefully, they’ll tempt you to order a copy of this superb anthology, featuring work by some of Africa’s finest experienced and emerging voices. Last year’s SSDA anthology, “Feast, Famine & Potluck”, included the winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing – “My Father’s Head” by Okwiri Oduor – so you can rest assured that you’ll be treated to some quality reading, although I urge you to so during daylight hours, to avoid being haunted by the many spirits and powerful images that populate this anthology.

More psychological than physical

This is predominately a book of SM short stories. Each story basically corresponds to a scene set in the past. It is well written, printed, and thoughful for this style of erotica. Most of the stories concentrate on the psychological aspects of SM and not on describing the imagery of a scene. They generally focus on the views of the bottom and what he/she feels and thinks as they are dominated. Some stories are heterosexual and some are homosexual with both men and women as tops and bottoms. On a scale of 1 to 10, light to heavy, graphic content, I would have to put the heaviest stories at 7 and the lightest stories at about 2. However, the majority of stories tend towards the lighter side. I liked the historical focus and would welcome more works set in the past.

Mostly disappointing

"Cinnammon Roses" is by far the standout in this thin little book and is one of the few stories that is actually erotic and interesting. The majority of the stories here are, unfortunately written with a heavy handed, unsexy style of clinical sex that is anything but what I'd term "erotic". Juvenile descriptions of faceless body parts entering other faceless body parts does not equal erotica. There was little story and even less characterization here and the "vampire" tales were mostly rehashes that have been done far better by other authors. My recommendation is to skip this one, save yourself a few bucks and if you're looking few a few chills and thrills pick up a Hot Blood anthology (edited by Jeff Gelb) instead.

Leaves a lot of room for improvement

I have read this book, but while it was a simple read, it leaves a lot of room for improvement. Cinnamon Roses is the best story by far. The others, while interesting reading, are not all that well written. This would be a good book for your collection if you are a rabid fan of vampire stories, but if you are a discriminating reader, skip this one. Anne Rice's books while not overtly marketed as Erotica have as much sensuality as this, and a delightfully well done story line to boot.

I loved the stories. I myself found my straight self getting a tad umm happy at points while reading some of the stories. One of my favorites was Cinnamin Roses, and I think Wanting. I loved most of the stories.

Perhaps Pinter's most successful political play

Harold Pinter's MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE is a short play in four scenes inspired by the oppression of the Kurds in Turkey. As the play begins, we see a group of women waiting all day through snowfall and intimidation by dogs to visit their imprisoned husbands and sons, . Pinter's "political" plays have always explored how individuals and governments exercise power over their fellow man, and here Pinter concentrates on how oppressive regimes have broken the spirits of minorities by banning their language:

"OFFICER: Your language is dead. It is forbidden. It is not permitted to speak your mountain language in this place. You cannot speak your language to your men. It is not permitted. Do you understand? You may not speak it. It is outlawed. You may only speak the language of the capital... Your language is forbidden.. It is dead. No one is allowed to speak your language. Your language no longer exists. Any questions?"

This prohibition continues even in the case of an elderly woman who does not speak the "language of the capital". She cannot communicate with her son in the prisoner because her language is banned and she has no other means. The third scene, where a woman is sent through the wrong door and sees her husband hooded and shackled and realizes that sleeping with the commandant is the only way to save her husband, is especially unnerving.

MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE has the same absurdist tendencies and odd turns of phrase as Pinter's other political plays, such as "Precisely" and "Party Time", but on the whole is one of his most successful works.

Buried Language

While the theater of the absurd is often regarded as distant and alienating for readers, it often carries the most profound examinations of social and historical flaws. MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE, by Harold Pinter, is a ruthlessly bitter and comic examination of the conditions of prisons where men and women are treated without regard as if they weren't part of the human race at all. In a broader context, it examines human separatism and our readiness to ignore the similarities between ourselves and other people. Through its disturbingly nonsensical dialogue, it becomes a harsh criticism of the human condition, that we are so unwilling to embrace all of mankind. MOUNTAIN LANGUAGE is a small treasure, one of the great pieces of absurd drama.

Powerful indictment of language police

This book, which I had read before (I gave my copy to a friend and so ordered a new one), is a short, terse, and very powerful testament to the cruelty of interfering with the language rights of others. I read somewhere that Pinter got the idea from an incident in Turkey--the same one that led to the establishment of International Mother Language Day in February. I think every two-bit "English Only" enthusiast in this country should read this book, if they're able to.

Patrizio is a short story between an older man, very much at the brink of his will to make another day, and a child filled with hope and wonder for life. While the man fills his evening with one cynical observation after another, boy’s optimistic nature shrugs these remarks with never failing curiosity and admiration for the storyteller.

During the short account the colonel assumes sardonic disposition, disparaging life itself it would seem, yet there’s subtlety in his inability to remain stolid and impassive in view of the boys charm and naivete.

Meaningfully written, the story stands on its own, though one can easily see presented short conversation between two unlikely interlocutors growing into something more substantial.

Master of Dialog

As a fan of classic literature, I'm sensing a style of writing such as Hemingway, the Master of Dialog. A style that is more suggestive than direct leaving the reader to use their own imagination in the end. Perhaps even a hint of him in the Main Character. I do look forward to the next short story by this Author.

all are used to educate the young Patrizio about love, courage

Patrizio in Italian means noble and in Latin, it means regal. Either way, David Tanager's second book, written in the same vein as his first, Old James is a reminder of transience and a yearning to transcend time. Here is a plot which upholds faces of both experience and youth simultaneously. Only, in this case, the old man, the Colonel's companion Patrizio is a discerning young man sipping wisdom as an insect takes to nectar. Both in style and in content, a marvelous show of Hemingway's hand, a tantalizingly familiar European setting, a hotel smelling of sweat, tobacco and gin, a dialogue between the old man and the boy opens up a world far above the trivial. Packed with potent metaphors and similes, all are used to educate the young Patrizio about love, courage, and the constant shift of time. In the final analysis, all feet eventually fade in the snow leaving no marks.

Where the two realities blend - the reflection - the plot within and the outer world, the shadow as it were of Plato's cave, promotes unflinching courage and love for freedom. Life is not diminished in death, rather it is transcended into a reality far greater than death. Alas, the Colonel didn't think he would be a defeatist when indeed he became that quintessence of dust or faded feet on snow. But he would rise infinitely above, in his dignified acceptance of a harshly hardwired reality. This acceptance comes from courage rather than fear of death. What he imbued in the mind of the youth was this philosophical message that life was a quicksand - a lesson learnt from an introspective journey of the boy from Old James to now an old dying man on a continuum of a timeline.

However, life is also to be lived. Freedom is to be cherished. Even though atonements would have to be made. One must find true love and allow oneself to be loved. But not to be consumed in its fire or be devoured like apples. Something that left the Colonel regrettably short-changed.'

Good read for those that enjoy genuine characters.

David Hopkin’s short stories show exceptional and often quirky moments in the average lives of average people. His characterizations are genuine and you can easily imagine these being the secret stories of people you know. Many of the stories contain snippets of wisdom and quite reflections that give the reader pause.

My only criticism would be when David’s stories become tied to the geography of the Dallas area. As a fellow Texas native, I found the references often distracting and pulled me from the flow of the story.

Fans of programs like NPR’s This American Life will enjoy David’s vignettes.

I was reminded of the Twilight Zone, but instead of tales of foreboding, Hopkins generates skillfully crafted visions of characters and situations we can appreciate as the weird, but inevitable outcome of the strange zone we call 21st Century America!

David makes you care for these characters the same way he does

David's empathy for his characters and the amount of research he does in developing them is evident. The plots are clever without being overly so. Each story is unique, yet there is continuity. David makes you care for these characters the same way he does, and you're better off having done so.
