A Good Start

Nova's Physics Book is one of their three book The MCAT series. It is a great starting point for someone who has forgotten a lot of physics or who needs to build up his/her physics confidence. The book presents the more basic physical concepts and finishes each chapter with a quiz. The questions include passages, series of problems, and individual, stand-alone questions. They are similar to, though perhaps easier than, the MCAT.
If you've already got your physics down and want to practice for the MCAT, this book is not for you. If you feel like you're not ready to attack the MCAT practice test yet, this book will help you understand the physics portion.

Best MCAT Physics book- better than Kaplan and Examkrackers!

If you have absolutely no idea about anything in Physics, buy this book! If you feel confident about the concepts and just need practice for MCAT buy the Examkrackers 1001 questions in Physics book. If you're like me, I bought both and scored a 12 on my PS section on the real MCAT. Before starting this book, I had no idea about any of the concepts in Physics because my school did not offer a very well taught Physics course. After about six weeks of intense studying and completing the Examkrackers book, I felt pretty confident in Physics.

There are few chapters that were a lot harder to understand and I had to consult online sources for it. Torques and Work chapters were the least accessible and not quite as well written. Overall, I think I found only one mistake in the book which was that one of the m.c. questions had two answers that were exactly the same. A minor mistake. Overall, I loved this book! I am glad I listened to other reviewers and went with this book. What this book is not is a magic device that will make you learn Physics in a short time. I suggest that if you were to tackle this book, give yourself at least a month's time. I spent about 6-7 hours everyday (including weekends) to finally master Physics but it was an accomplishment I am very proud of! Once you get done with the book, I think you will feel a lot more confident and relieved and be quite well prepared for MCAT!

One note: This book covers a lot more Physics and some is even beyond the scope of MCAT. But, they do tell you what is important and what is not. My point is that if you get stuck on something minor (such as stress/strain or viscosity of fluids) and can't figure it out even after using online resources, move on. More than likely it won't be on MCAT.

This book helped me double my MCAT score!

By using this book, I doubled my MCAT physcial sciences score from 5 to 10, with a 34S overall. This book is very thorough, but not boring. It is very helpful, even if physics terrfies you. The comfortable writing style helps you get over your fears and allows you to learn a lot. I can't recomend this book highly enough. The text is easy to read and understand, and the questions are the best out there for MCAT physics review. Buy this book early and give yourself time to work through it -- you will end up feeling very comfortable in the physical sciences test. I wish the author would write a similar book for every other MCAT subject, but I guess we can't get everything that we want!

Celia Miles Crafts a Boisterous Collection of Stories

From the melodrama of the title story where a woman is literally running away from her life to the black comedy of "Never Falter, Never Quail" where the sixty-six-year-old narrator in a retirement community, glimpsing herself in a mirror while walking in the mall with a friend, becomes obsessed with the size of her backside, to the downright spooky (even kooky?) story "A Coimbra State of Mind" where the central character, before leaving for Coimbra, the university town in Portugal where she first met and fell in love with her husband, determines to get even with the husband (who is now leaving her for another woman) by putting poison in a bowl of potato salad, the "only creative aspect of her life," Celia Miles has crafted a lively, boisterous collection of stories, appealingly and refreshingly narrated (all but one!) by women with not a little irony and overstatement.
These are women, often middle-aged with "manicured minds," who have lived life obliquely, "on a slant," as it were--the title is revelatory--and are now on a "voyage" of discovery. Like "sea creatures . . . creating a shell of flesh, a shell of behaviors," they have survived. Now, "shedding illusions like clothes," "stripping" (sometimes literally) down to bare essentials, they are determined to live on their own terms.
Their transmutation is described movingly in this passage from "An Interlude in Leros": "She'd expected a sleepy, just-get-me-there journey, but all her senses were on alert. She noted every crinkle and crevice in the rocks looming to the side of the boat; she heard every squish of water against the boat, every change in the throttle of the engine, she understood Odysseus and every sailor who felt more at home, more certainty, in movement than on solid sail."
Miles' collection is timely--it speaks to the condition of women's lives today; it is also timeless--exploring the univeral urge for self-actualization, self-realization, and fulfillment.

On a Slant

Cheers for a bracing change: not facing a turning point, but balancing on a slant. A reader wonders immediately if the slant leads up or down. In the episodes facing the woman of the title story, the inclines of life's architecture await enthusiastic analysis. Author Celia Miles is probably not surprised at the existence of a house on the U.S. tourist trail of oddities where a tossed ball seems to roll uphill.
Miles shows a talent for designing characters who amaze readers with their unusual angles. They do what we least expect, but their choices please us, and we enjoy looking back to find the trait that made the decision inevitable after all.
Variety characterizes this collection, both in content and style. "Buttons" is short and unadorned, then ends with blinding complexity that teases reason. "The Cat" approaches surrealism. "Dingy" delineates as individuals three little sisters whose pet has died. "Alabaster's Mill," with a unique atmosphere and setting, seems the kernel of a novel.
Miles has garnered praise for realistic mountain settings in her prior books, and provides some here for her fans. She proves herself cosmopolitan, however, as she presents several contemporary women traveling abroad or expatriated. We perceive through their eyes and across the tensions of their challenges countries like England, Greece, Italy, Portugal. My favorite among these is "Woman of the Stones," a story that will cause some readers to gasp aloud, "Oh, my God!" and wrestle with it in their dreams. In contrast, Miles can incite belly laughs, as she does in "Never Falter, Never Quail." Nostalgia buffs will appreciate the poignant vignette from World War II, "And The Animals Knelt," which concludes the collection on an upbeat note.
In the stories assembled for On a Slant, Miles has plotted endings that may not be to every reader's taste. The finish is usually clear, not a puzzle; nevertheless, the reader who craves a neat conclusive bundle may not have her wish granted. Personally, I enjoy the opportunies of this feature. I can't race to the next story because I'm relishing the wonder of the one just finished, re-experiencing its blend of subtleties as one savors the lingering taste of good wine. Foreign or domestic. Whether in a current life, past life, a dream, nightmare, or even in fantasy, each tale will strike a chord with some woman, somewhere. Celia's ability to speak to mothers, daughters, wives and lovers makes her unique in seeking to expose life in a vein that some women may find hidden in the deep recesses of their minds; or it may lighten the load of guilt from a hidden fear or experience. Poignant, funny, frightening, even unbelievable, "On A Slant" is an easy, thought-provoking read.

horrible and contradicting!

This book was horrible! There are 2 practice tests included. There were a few questions that I thought were correct in spite of the explanation, which didn't seem to "gel" with what I learned in grad school. Worst of all, the same question was repeated on both tests and had a DIFFERENT answer on each. Meaning, the first test had said the answer was A and the second test said it was B!!! The same question, with the same choices...that is beyond contradicting! How can this be a reliable source for studying? Buyer beware!! DO NOT BUY this book. The Complete Guide to Social Work was 100 times better!!!

About the Author
P. G. Wodehouse (1881 1975) spent much of his life in Southampton, New York, but was born in England and educated in Surrey. He became an American citizen in 1955. In a literary career spanning more than seventy years, he published more than ninety books and twenty film scripts, and collaborated on more than thirty plays and musical comedies.

Early Jeeves/Wooster, and Reggie Pepper too

This was the earliest (1919) of Wodehouse's short story collections to mention Jeeves in the title, and these are very early Jeeves/Wooster stories. But only half of the stories in this volume are set in the Wooster household. The other half of these stories feature Reggie Pepper. Pepper can be thought of as a proto-Bertie, but he has no Jeeves-like character around. The Reggie Pepper stories are also similar to the Jeeves/Wooster stories in that they are written in Reggie's voice. Once Wodehouse got rolling with the Jeeves/Wooster stories, he abandoned Reggie Pepper. I think there are only eight Reggie Pepper stories in total, with half of them found in this collection.

A few points are worth noting. The earliest Jeeves/Wooster story is not in this collection. That first story was "Extricating Gussie", which is to be found in the 1917 collection "The Man With Two Left Feet." It is in "Extricating Gussie" that Jeeves and Wooster travel to New York. All the Jeeves/Wooster stories in "My Man Jeeves" are set in New York as well. Another factor to bear in mind is that most of these early stories were later reworked, and appear in "Carry On, Jeeves." The story "Leave it to Jeeves" appears in "Carry On" as "The Artistic Career of Corky", with the first few paragraphs re-written for that version. The stories "Jeeves and the Unbidden Guest" and "Jeeves and The Hard-Boiled Egg" appear in "Carry On" with no obvious alterations. Also, the story "Helping Freddie" appears in "Carry On" as "Fixing it for Freddie", but in that case the story has been changed from a Reggie Pepper vehicle to one featuring Bertie and Jeeves - the plot and much of the language carry directly through this transformation.

In short, three of the four Jeeves/Wooster stories, and one of the Reggie Pepper stories, appear, with varying degrees of alteration, in "Carry On, Jeeves." The only Jeeves/Wooster item in this collection that doesn't appear in "Carry On" is "The Aunt and the Sluggard."

Jeeves and Jarvis- a wonderful concoction!

What can I say about P.G. Wodehouse's stories that hasn't already been said? They're brilliant! Delightful! Charming! Pleasant as a post-prandial brandy! It has, however, been said that for full effect these stories must be read aloud. Well, really, I say. Who's got time? What? Martin Jarvis! That's who! The finest audio book reader to ever grace my hi fi! Nobody brings Bertie Wooster and Jeeves to life with the elegance and charm of Mr. Jarvis. His range of voices is surperb! His delivery is spot on, and his love of the material is evident.
You may wonder how I can say his readings surpass even those of Mssrs. Fry and Laurie. The answer is simple. The televised version (which is excellent) cannot contain every syllable, every illiteration Wodehouse penned. The audio version can!
The stories here include two from CARRY ON JEEVES, finishing out that selection, as well as three others. My only complaint, if that can be said, is that the three other stories do not involve The Jeeves/Wooster duo. But who cares? They are wonderful anyway.
This collection is a delight and truly worth adding to your collection- even if you own the books. However, I don't recommend listening to them while driving. You may lose control during a fit of laughter. Vive le Jeeves! Vive le Jarvis! Vive le Wodehouse!

Classic Wodehousiana!

Martin Jarvis' reading of My Man Jeeves runs circles around Jonathan Cecil's reading of *anything* (for more ranting on Cecil, see Psmith: Journalist). He simply embodies the characters of Bertie Wooster, Jeeves, Biffy, Corky, and all the cast (albeit with the same typical attempt at an American accent).
This recording consists of the two stories from the printed Carry On, Jeeves collection that were left out of the CD copy of the Carry On, Jeeves audiobook--one of which has Jeeves himself as the narrator--as well as three stories starring Bertie Wooster's predecessor, Reggie Pepper.
Pepper by himself isn't as funny or touching as the relationship between Jeeves and Wooster, but the predicaments are identical to those that Bertie would find himself getting into. The only difference is that Reggie manages to extricate himself from the troubles, unlike Bertie, who relies on the wiles of his man, Jeeves.
Either of this or Carry On, Jeeves would appeal to the casual Wodehouse fan, and are perfect for long road trips or any other situation where a laugh is needed. Wodehouse exceeds all others in humor and, one assumes, will remain that way for centuries to come.

I love Scrivener, and Wizardgold has built his Writer Workflow ...

I received a copy of this ebook for review. I love Scrivener, and Wizardgold has built his Writer Workflow around Scrivener, adding in his thoughts on programs for mind mapping and outlining as well. He runs through several options, and out to get the information out of those programs and into Scrivener. Windows is not covered, only OSX and iOS. There is some good suggestions and questions to ponder when you are setting up your own workflow. This is not an in-depth guide, or tips and tricks type of book, but a solid base for those who are trying to manage the process from initial ideas to final/edited copy.

Not only for geeks

Despite its title this book isn't only for 'geeks' but any author, blogger, teacher or student who regularly writes on a Mac or an iOS device and wants to find the best apps for the job without trawling hundreds of software blogs. As well as a variety of app options for all stages of the writing process, you will also discover ways that using these kinds of apps can enhance your creativity, effectiveness and productivity as a writer. The author's open, non-dogmatic approach is refreshing amongst the prevailing attitude in the blogosphere that there is only one way to do things.

Connect the dots in a writer's workflow.

I enjoyed the connections David Allen makes with outlining, mind mapping, and Scrivener. He explains his choices and the reasons behind them. You get a sense of the writer's workflow using current software for the Mac. The book also links to many videos that enhance the reading experience that may help you better understand the workflow process. This book will help you get started in gathering the tools to write.
