About the Author
EDITH NESBIT (1858-1924) lived in England and had dreamed of becoming a poet since she was fifteen years old. After her husband fell ill, it was up to her to support her small family. For the next nineteen years, she published a number of novels, essays, articles, poems, and short stories. But it was not until 1899, when The Story of the Treasure Seekers was published, that she achieved great success. Her groundbreaking style of depicting realistic, believable children quickly gained a popularity that has lasted for more than a century.

In this delightful collection of fantasies, the listener is introduced to the formal milieu of Victorian England, then whisked away to a series of fantastic worlds. Sadly, this reading fails to exploit the dramatic possibilities of these flights of fancy in the tradition of Alice. The varied moods created in each story are bland and indistinguishable. Ward's presence is conspicuous; her flat tone is barely concealed by inconsistent and unconvincing accent changes. If I Could Give This Book 10,000 Stars -- I Would! :)

This book is a collection of short stories, and finding it again has been a highly emotional experience for me. I had read it YEARS ago in the Library when I was but a small child, and loved every syllable of it; then the Library LOST it, and I pined for it terribly. I had even forgotten its title (I had *thought* it was "Nine Unlikely Tales" -- but this turns out to be a completely different book).

Then about eight years ago, as an adult of 32, I FINALLY laid hands on a copy of "The Magic World" once more. Oh my! How I adored reading those old fine magical stories again! How I wept -- WEPT! -- to read all those old stories which I had so long loved and lost and now found again! Who could ever forget such stories as "Accidental Magic", or "The Cat-Hood Of Maurice", or "Kenneth And The Carp", or "Belinda And Bellamant; Or The Bells Of Carrillon-Land"??? This last has a very catchy verse in it ("Out! Out! Into the night!/The belfry bells are ours by right!") which I have never forgotten and which I looked for -- and found -- and triumphantly BELLOWED at the very top of my lungs the instant the book was again in my hands! Ah, me!!!

These stories are all "Classic Nesbit", and even if the book is "brand new" to you and not nostalgic as it is for me, it is still well worth the getting, and at a VERY reasonable price!

One final note of historic literary interest: the story "The Aunt and Amabel" -- with its train station tucked away inside a wardrobe in a spare room -- was C. S. Lewis' inspiration for setting the land of Narnia inside a similar wardrobe in "The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe". :)

Magic and common sense!

I have to say, I love E Nesbit's works! It's not just the magic, it's the characters and humour, and I love the way real-life situations mix in with the magic! (hmmm... mentioned 'magic' twice already...)
There are twelve stories in all... and I can't summarise them all for you... but "Septimus Septimusson" (my favourite) was amusing, about the seventh son of a seventh son who had to go seek his fortune. Unfortunately I can't think of anyway to summarise this story either (gives away the "plot line"), so in conclusion:
MAGIC + HUMOUR + REAL-LIFE SITUATIONS + HUMOUR
I'm sorry it's not a very good review, though.

Valuable Stories

This is a great book. I bought it when I was about to go on a trip, and I couldn't read it until I got on the plane. I allowed myself to read one story. The story was "The White Cat". Now, this was a great story, with a great charector. The white cat enchanted me, especialy because my grandmother had a white china cat. It was all I could do to wait until the plane to read the rest, but I did. The rest of the book was great, too, but my favorite story was still the White Cat. Some of my other favorite stories were Belenda and Bellamont, the Princess and the Hedge Pig, and the Cathood of Maurice. These are really great stories. After awhile, I got my grandma to give me her own white cat, and I felt so glad. These stories have great effects on the readers.

Does the job, just not well

I bought this product out of desperation since there aren't many options at the moment for the new MCAT, and my test is in a month. I refused to buy Next Step books since their reviews are suspicious as all hell on here. All of their reviews on here are... questionable (oh gee, nothing but 5* reviews from people who have reviewed nothing but next step books. What a coincidence). Take that for what you will.

What I like about this book:

Seems to accurately follow the outline of what's needed for Psych/Soc topics

What I don't like:

This book isn't concise or well-written for a review book. It reads more like a textbook. The text is dense dense dense. Nothing is written in an intelligent way to help you learn concepts quickly and efficiently, it's just dumped on you.

Lots of filler crap you don't need. The first 2 chapters of this book are just about the MCAT as a whole and have no relation to psychology/sociology. Why? Do they put that in every MCAT book? Redundant an unnecessary, but at least they can claim this book has 8 chapters instead of 6. Also, a paragraph on 'forgetting' in the memory section? Who the bleeping bleep doesn't know what it means to forget something? That could've been one sentence - 'In contrast to memorizing something, we tend to forget information, the decay of a memory until it can't be recalled.'. Boom. I guess that would make this book too short and readable.

I'm sure this book will teach me what I need to know, I just wish they would've taken the time to write it in a review book sort of way instead of just heavy, dense wording like it has.

Lacks clarity.

The book has all the information, but it lacks clarity. In other words, it is difficult to understand. It reads like a textbook, not a test-prep. Test-prep should be very clear, readable and thus easy to understand.

An example of a sentence in the book: "A postsynaptic neuron has many different neurons with synapses leading to it, however, and each of these synapses can release neurotransmitter many times per second."

Fortunately, I have a good understanding of the subject, and can thus decipher this mess. What the author is saying, basically, is that many different (presynaptic) neurons activate the dendrites of a particular (post-synaptic) neuron. The post synaptic neuron is activated based on the combination of presynaptic signals.

These sort of sentences are throughout the book, making easy concepts difficult.

*2 practice tests but good content

Well first of all, after registering the book online I found that the three practice tests included are 2 unique tests plus the MCAT Demo test that the Princeton Review puts out for free on their website for anyone to try. Yes it is a full-length but I found it sort of gimmicky that they advertise the book as coming with 3 tests.

Be sure to register online because there is content addendum to the last few chapters and a few errors that are corrected for. It's sort of inconvenient that 50 plus PDF pages of information that you need is not included in the book but at least they post it online for you. As someone else said, the first two chapters are basically a general intro to the MCAT which they stick into all of their books, but I have noticed other test prep books that do that as well.

EDIT: Bumped up to 4 stars after using the book for a while. The content seems pretty good and thorough, it hits most of the points on the AAMC topic outline, and explains things clearly. Easy to read. There are questions throughout to help gauge understanding, and a few passages at the end of each chapter for practice which are decent. And even with only 2 practice tests, it's still good deal for the price.

Excellent !

A Master piece ! Fantastic work !

It's very hard to keep someone like me glued to a book. And as cliched as it may sound, you did keep me glued to a book. You have a sincerity and passion about your writing that I have seen with very few writers. The words seem to flow out naturally.
Another thing I love about your writing is that you make the reader think and that's a great skill. In your stories, not all the answers were readily provided (I say that in a good way), and you challenge the reader to come up with an interpretation or think about why a certain thing just happened. That equates to interactive novel-writing and makes reading a lot more fun.

Some of your emotions were described beautifully and on more occasions than one, the tears were ready to roll down and I had to stop and tell myself "oh it's just a story". That's the power of the writer ! Well done !

Great first book!

Having born in India and now living in the US, I obviously relate to the stories. I like the descriptions of smells and tastes, the sentimental characters with their indirect hints and the exploration of relationships between the characters.

In some stories, it did take me a while to get used to the short passages and the multiple characters (some of whom are more developed, while others play a peripheral part) that made it a tad difficult to follow the story without getting distracted at times. Overall, I loved reading through the book and it is a great first short story collection.

So emotionally simple that a man could get it!!

I am one of the first few to read these stories long before it got published, while they were still Ramya's blog entries. The thing that amazes me about her is her panache to express some of the most convoluted human emotions with utmost lucidity and simplicity. I mean it is really simple and engaging that a "Man could read it", you know like the Geico commercial.
These are stories based on relationships, however for us guys its got its fare share of comedy and quite a bit of suspense and sometimes completely gets you unprepared with its surprise endings.
Good work Ramya!!

Donald E. Westlake (1933-2008) wrote over a hundred novels under his own name and pseudonyms. Westlake Sci-Fi Set in Space Short Story

The Risk Profession was originally published in Amazing Stories in the year 1961. It's basically a murder mystery set in space where an insurance investigator has to go to a space version of a gold mining claim and work out if the claimant on a policy murdered his insured mining partner. I originally read this short story in A Good Story and Other Stories so if you can track that down, it may be better value, plus you get some other Westlake short stories too.

I had hoped this was another Westlake anthology collection containing maybe a few stories that I hadn't come across before but alas it is just the one story - The Risk Profession. It is fairly short, only 59 pages at a print size that's even larger than most large print novels' font size. It's cover also makes it look like a graphic novel (comic book) for some reason. Maybe a good gift for someone who doesn't read much to get them interested in novels and there's no better author to do that with, than Westlake.

I do like the fact though that a publisher, Aegypan Press in this case is republishing a Westlake short story written long ago. Hopefully they'll do a few more in the future which will save time and money tracking down old anthologies long out of print.

If you want to experience Westlake's talent at writing in space science fiction I'd check out the great novel Anarchaos. If it's no longer available, or a reasonable price, it's also inside Westlake's anthology Tomorrow's Crimes, although not having read that anthology myself I'm not sure if it is just an abridged version or the full length novel.

If you've only read this story, you have a great multitude of sensational high quality, often masterpiece novels awaiting you under Westlake's name (and a few pen names as well, such as Richard Stark). Westlake wrote across most genres, his most successful being the comic crime capers, but he's also written hard violent crime, mystery novels, and even a Western to name but a few genres. In my opinion there was no greater author than him.

A good, not great, story

This is a short story presented in a pamphlet. I remember reading it years ago in an anthology where it is more appropriately published.

The story involves a murder on an astroid, looked into by an insurance investigator working the claim. Without going too far into it, the story is good, but hardly memorable. Westlake lovers will appreciate having it in their collections, those who simply appreciate a good story will like it, but is it worth the money? Maybe not.
