Patrizio is a short story between an older man, very much at the brink of his will to make another day, and a child filled with hope and wonder for life. While the man fills his evening with one cynical observation after another, boy’s optimistic nature shrugs these remarks with never failing curiosity and admiration for the storyteller.

During the short account the colonel assumes sardonic disposition, disparaging life itself it would seem, yet there’s subtlety in his inability to remain stolid and impassive in view of the boys charm and naivete.

Meaningfully written, the story stands on its own, though one can easily see presented short conversation between two unlikely interlocutors growing into something more substantial.

Master of Dialog

As a fan of classic literature, I'm sensing a style of writing such as Hemingway, the Master of Dialog. A style that is more suggestive than direct leaving the reader to use their own imagination in the end. Perhaps even a hint of him in the Main Character. I do look forward to the next short story by this Author.

all are used to educate the young Patrizio about love, courage

Patrizio in Italian means noble and in Latin, it means regal. Either way, David Tanager's second book, written in the same vein as his first, Old James is a reminder of transience and a yearning to transcend time. Here is a plot which upholds faces of both experience and youth simultaneously. Only, in this case, the old man, the Colonel's companion Patrizio is a discerning young man sipping wisdom as an insect takes to nectar. Both in style and in content, a marvelous show of Hemingway's hand, a tantalizingly familiar European setting, a hotel smelling of sweat, tobacco and gin, a dialogue between the old man and the boy opens up a world far above the trivial. Packed with potent metaphors and similes, all are used to educate the young Patrizio about love, courage, and the constant shift of time. In the final analysis, all feet eventually fade in the snow leaving no marks.

Where the two realities blend - the reflection - the plot within and the outer world, the shadow as it were of Plato's cave, promotes unflinching courage and love for freedom. Life is not diminished in death, rather it is transcended into a reality far greater than death. Alas, the Colonel didn't think he would be a defeatist when indeed he became that quintessence of dust or faded feet on snow. But he would rise infinitely above, in his dignified acceptance of a harshly hardwired reality. This acceptance comes from courage rather than fear of death. What he imbued in the mind of the youth was this philosophical message that life was a quicksand - a lesson learnt from an introspective journey of the boy from Old James to now an old dying man on a continuum of a timeline.

However, life is also to be lived. Freedom is to be cherished. Even though atonements would have to be made. One must find true love and allow oneself to be loved. But not to be consumed in its fire or be devoured like apples. Something that left the Colonel regrettably short-changed.'

Good read for those that enjoy genuine characters.

David Hopkin’s short stories show exceptional and often quirky moments in the average lives of average people. His characterizations are genuine and you can easily imagine these being the secret stories of people you know. Many of the stories contain snippets of wisdom and quite reflections that give the reader pause.

My only criticism would be when David’s stories become tied to the geography of the Dallas area. As a fellow Texas native, I found the references often distracting and pulled me from the flow of the story.

Fans of programs like NPR’s This American Life will enjoy David’s vignettes.

Hopkins may miss the parties, but his fiction hits the mark!

Hopkins creates a world in which strange things happen and we're very glad they do. I was reminded of the Twilight Zone, but instead of tales of foreboding, Hopkins generates skillfully crafted visions of characters and situations we can appreciate as the weird, but inevitable outcome of the strange zone we call 21st Century America!

David makes you care for these characters the same way he does

David's empathy for his characters and the amount of research he does in developing them is evident. The plots are clever without being overly so. Each story is unique, yet there is continuity. David makes you care for these characters the same way he does, and you're better off having done so.

19th Century Wit

Anything Ambrose Bierce writes is at least entertaining. He attempts to craft some horror, but the true value of his writing is the wit and humor, of which there is precious little from his contemporaries. One of my favorite exchanges is from this story, in which a young man is being questioned by a coroner:
"You were with him when he died?"
"Near him."
"How did that happen--your presence, I mean?"
"I was visiting him at this place to shoot and fish. A part of my purpose, however, was to study him, and his odd, solitary way of life. He seemed a good model for a character in fiction. I sometimes write stories."
"I sometimes read them."
"Thank you."
"Stories in general--not yours."

This gallows humor is classic Bierce.

Bierce's take on invisible horrors, a single short story

Bierce wrote this horror tale in 1893, and was accused of lifting the idea from Fitz James O'Brien's "What Was It?", solely on the lone similar quality of the beast, invisibility. A few years later Guy de Maupassant would use this same idea in his "The Horla", which is my favorite of the three stories. Anyway, this Bierce story is a worthy read, and it's free. My only complaint about this edition is that it drops the chapter titles altogether, the first of which was titled "One Does Not Always Eat What Is on the Table".

(To clarify, and since Amazon seems to mix all the reviews of various editions of a work into multiple listings, I am reviewing the free Kindle version, ASIN: B004TS95N2)

I was really looking for a great read here. I was told this was reminiscent of HP Lovecraft. I found it disappointing. Very derivative. Still, not a bad time killer.

My opinion after taking gross anatomy...

I am a first-year medical student. I was initially excited to use this book but after my experience in the gross anatomy lab, I don't think this or any BOOK for that matter will be useful when you are trying to identify some of the smaller structures that you will encounter and are expected to identify in the lab. I think the book is fine for the larger muscles of the lower and upper limbs but when you are trying to identify the tiniest of nerves and arteries, you really need to be up close to the cadaver or the prosected model. The only thing that would come close to a study aid for gross anatomy lab is a video dissection. To really understand everything in anatomy lab, you have to look at the structures on different bodies and touch and feel them for them to "stick" with you. Identifying the brachial plexus is fairly easy when the cadaver is right in front of you but can be surprisingly more difficult when looking at a picture because you can't move stuff around like you can on the cadaver. Same thing with the phrenic nerve; you can spot the phrenic nerve from a mile away on a live cadaver but you can get confused as to its location when you look at a 2D picture in a book.

Now don't get me wrong, this book can be a great resource if you need help in INITIALLY identifying a structure on your lab assignment sheet but when it comes to test time, nobody is going to ask you to point out that same structure in this book. You have to find it on your cadaver and you'll be surprised how different your cadaver looks from the neatly dissected models in this book. In that respect, this book is somewhat useless.

I also found this book totally useless for anything related to the heart. I actually got a headache trying to figure out the arterial supply and internal structures from this book but found it rather enjoyable when I watched a dissection video. We had to identify the moderator band and watching that on a video was so much more easier than trying to identify it with this book.

The pictures are of good quality and I think it's a good book to have in your library as a reference. If you are using this to study for anatomy lab, I think you will be disappointed with that approach. I don't really know who else would use a book like this but if you are using it just to learn for the sake of learning, then it does have great pictures of neatly dissected cadavers. For passing anatomy lab exams, go to your lab and learn from your cadaver.

This atlas misses a lot of essential anatomy important for surgery. It's sections on the axilla, inguinal region, and major vessels are weak compared with Netter, Thieme, Grants, and Sobatta. It is more complete but harder to use as an introduction to anatomy than Moses's atlas. It has some use as a supplement to the other atlases, but I cannot recommend it as a primary atlas for either an anatomical dissections or surgery. The online material is of minimal use (no inkling or other web access to the book).

I can definitely say this book has been a lifesaver! The photographs are incredibly detailed and it's super helpful since tests/practicals are based on real bones and cadavers not diagrams. Most other atlases are great but it's much easier to visualize the info with these photographs. It's pretty expensive to buy this textbook, so I just rented it from Amazon, which is a great deal for a student budget.
