I use the cards in my methods classes for elementary majors to review for the Praxis subject assessment. I also compare the cards to the list of content on the Praxis subject assessment to identify what we might need to focus on more. Then I might use a few cards during class for some small group activities and whole group review. So far, students have found them to be helpful.

Good study method for so much material

The Flashcards are great, but usually Flashcards aren't as wordy. I wish the definitions or explanations were a lot smaller or separated more. Also, maybe a template of how to break down the studying because it is so much material.

Wished I had used these first!

I just took the PRAXIS today, while I don't know my official scores yet it looks like I may have failed the science & math portion. I had bought these then had to delay on taking my test, when I saw the negative reviews I freaked out and purchased the official PRAXIS study guide and practice tests. I knew that material cold....I don't know that 5 questions I had today came from the study guide. I just looked through my cards and I deeply regret not using them to study with, it looks like a lot of the material on the actual test is covered in these cards. I am not sure why all the negative reviews.
There are some errors in the cards, but there are also errors in the PRAXIS official study guide.
I think there are different versions of this test compared to reactions I have gotten from class mates. This test, at least the version I had, is very hard, I am a straight A student and I just barely passed the two sections I did pass. I would strongly suggest using these cards, I know there are a lot of them, but the version of the test I had was insane!

Edward D. Hoch was the most ingenious of modern mystery writers. Another great collection from the new master of the locked room mystery, unduly delayed

Another first class collection from the man who took over John Dickson Carr's mantle. I only wish the publishers Crippen and Landru could improve their publication schedule of these volumes from glacial (the last story in this volume was published in 1991!) to merely slow. Perhaps there are copyright problems with the original publishers. But it seems the publishers themselves are not too clued-in. As of this writing, I am avidly reading this volume, while Crippen and Landru's site says it "is in proofs".
I very much appreciate the work that Crippen and Landru do, but it does seem they are run by people who can't quite remember where they left yesterday's old tea-bag just to get one more cuppa from it.

A nice collection; Recommended

As you would expect from an anthology produced by the members of a creative writing group this is a very mixed collection of stories and poems. There is obvious talent among these writers, some are more advanced in their art than others and there are one or two gems in this book. As far as I am concerned it is more than worth the purchase price for "Mr. White's Performance" alone, although there are several other stories I liked too. I do not have a great fondness for poetry and am not an expert but one or two of these offerings did strike a chord with me.
I would definitely recommend this collection and my only negative point would be that perhaps the book could have benefited from another edit before publication.

I really like how there is lots of practice of all the tested skills as well as actual practice test questions. I believe this book is going to be extremely helpful in preparing my son for his upcoming test. I find the test taking skill tips to be the most helpful. Its great to see how I can explain to my son which answers are wrong and why.

The explanation given for the answers to the questions was very helpful. If my son answered a question incorrectly, it was helpful to be able to go over the explanation in the answer key how the problem should be solved and/or the reason behind the answer. I was also pleased topics were explained. For example, the difference between a metaphor and a simile; rules of when to use commas and capital letters. Also, the examples of how to solve different types math problems was very helpful.

I bought Cracking the TOEFL IBT with Audio CD, 2009 Edition (College Test Prep)( Princeton Review) and Kaplan TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM 2008-2009 (Kaplan Toefl Ibt) .i read both of them for one month and passed the ibt by 97. This is what I think about these two books on all four part of ibt:
Princeton Review
Reading 3 out of 5: good strategies but the readings are simpler than the real exam
Writing 5 out of 5: great strategies and samples with good drills
Speaking 4 out of 5: good strategies and drills but difficult to use on exam
Listening 4 out of 5: good strategies and sample but limited number
Overall 4 out of 5: the most important negative point is that it comes only with audio cd and you can not experience the real exam condition.
Kaplan
Reading 5 out of 5: great strategies and samples
Writing 2 out of 5: some useful techniques but not so helpful
Speaking 2 out of 5: some useful techniques but too general
Listening 4 out of 5: good strategies and examples

Perfect study guide...

i bought this book for my 2009 TOEFL IBT and after studying it and following its strategies, i was convinced that i was well prepared for the test, studied for 5weeks and got 100 out of 120. Now basically if you are expecting this book to teach you English language and grammar completely, you are mistaken, this is just a guide on how to excel on the test, a perfect one i must say, your general performance on a language is based on lifetime practice; constant reading, writing and speaking the language, but regarding the test, this is a blueprint on how to pass the TOEFL IBT.

Good but not Great

I give this book--Cracking the TOEFL iBT, 2008 Edition, by Douglas Pierce and Sean Kinsell, 3 stars here as someone familiar with the various tasks that the TOEFL iBT requires of its test-takers. Having taught how to master this test to students for more than a year, I have gone through all of the available books and CDs on the market to see what works best. The reality is that I cannot recommend any one book to cover everything. Some are great at providing sample questions, or multiple practice tests, while others offer some good information that teaches how to answer certain questions. No book covers everything, though, which means that students must take a regular course in addition to self-practice. If you had to choose one book, though, this might do it because it has a fair amount of good instruction that can familiarize you with what you would see on test day.

Specifically, let me mention a few items here that I think stand out in this book. First, the organization of the book is good. The introduction gives the basic facts that familiarize the reader with the test and some general information. Then, it gets moving with a part called "Core Concepts," which takes a look at some basics for each of the four sections. Following that, we have Part III, "Cracking Each Section of the TOEFL," which goes into basic principles and basic approaches and then unleashes the reader on practice drills.

On thing that I can say is critical about this book's quality is that it mentions the "Process of Elimination (POE)" as a method to help increase your odds at choosing the best answer (page 13). This is embedded into a smaller section on improving your score and increasing your odds on individual multiple-choice questions. Rather than tell you to guess, this says that there is a logic and you can increase your odds on choosing the best answer by eliminating as many clearly wrong choices as you can. With four answers choices, you have a 25 percent chance, which is low. Eliminate one answer, and you have a 33 percent chance, and eliminate two, and your chance increases to 50 percent. If you must guess this is the only way to do it, by eliminating something and improving your odds at success. There is never an excuse to guess at random.

The best aspect of this book is the explanation and focus on structure within the Speaking Section. Students are typically scared of this section because they have to perform in a number of different tasks, within a short amount of time. Added to that, concerns about accent or poor grammar, and students can freeze up without answering the questions. In fact, while this section concerns many students as something subjective and difficult, it also has a series of rules to follow that make it easy. First, students must take note of the scoring rubric, which outlines in objective terms the procedure for how graders evaluate each speaking task. Did the student answer the question, speak employing reasonable grammar and adequate vocabulary, have connection words and phrases, not have long pauses, speak in English, and answer using a logical structure. This book helps you answer the questions by using deliberate template that take you step-by-step. For instance, page 324 lists a question and sample response for the personal preference question (Speaking Task #1). The question is similar to what an ETS test might ask: If you had an entire month to do whatever you would like to do, what would it be? Include details and examples to support your selection." The response is set out into categories and placed in a table form.

So, this is a good outlined answer to the question and would score high. I like how this takes the reader through each step in a logical order and shows the simplicity of the structure. Students who try to talk above their level or put in too many ideas often fail. Keep things simple and giving a structure like this is a positive thing. Moreover, the bolded words are there to show some keywords that give your sentences connections or direction.

While this is a great tool for readers, it fails to take that extra step and teach students how to take these notes. When preparation time is only 15 seconds, how can a test-taker think of those things AND write down all of those words? It is, of course, virtually impossible. So, this book should tell students that this template is a great way to structure your answers but if a reader tries to duplicate it, s/he will run out of time and score low because improvisation will lead to errors. Notes should be taken in keyword form only, directing the test-taker to the larger thought. You do not have time to write complete sentences in your notes but you do have the time to write down keywords that will drive your response. One more trick that should be in this book is that you can prepare a list of connection and direction words/phrases in advance and write them down beforehand so you can simply reference those particular words, such as "moreover," in "addition," and "finally."

Overall, this book is nice for tackling the test one piece at a time. For the 2008 edition, the sample questions for the reading are outdated (perhaps the 2011 book has revised this), but the real strength is the speaking templates. These can help you organize your thoughts and show you just how easily you can score on the Speaking Section. Though this book provides a lot of information, it falls short in providing a complete tutorial experience. People trying to study for this at home will find it difficult because not only is the material hard to comprehend, but the TOEFL itself is not a normal test. The TOEFL iBT is designed based on a set of rules and has specific procedures that you must follow to master it. Each section tests a slightly different skill yet one common item is that it mimics the common academic structure used in the United States. I did not realize how basic this structure was when I taught history at Boston-area universities, but when I understood how the TOEFL works, it struck me as obvious. The Reading Section is deliberate in its structure, the Listening Section follows a logic of introducing the main topic or problem and then providing details, organized in expected ways. Finally, the answers you create for the Speaking and Writing Sections must conform to that structure--introduction, supported by reasons and details, and then perhaps a conclusion that restates your thesis/position. Make sure to lock your doors!

R F Whittaker masters the short story form once again. In his latest tale, he introduces us to his newest creation. Here is a man that may seem normal on the outside, but the inside is a totally different matter. This mysterious man finds a random street and walks up and down it, checking each door until he finds one unlocked. Heaven help those inside.

At first, I thought this tale was going to be purely psychological terror, but it quickly escalated into some pretty visually disturbing scenes. Not only does R F Whittaker write these scenes in such a way that the reader can picture what is going on, but I swear I could hear the gruesome sound of....well, you need to read to find out.

If anything, my only gripe with the story is that I thought the author could have ended the story one paragraph earlier, leaving a bit to the reader's imagination because the final paragraph takes the story down a dark, dark road where few authors and readers dare to tread.
