A Collection of Children's Stories?

While Stoker originally wrote this collection of eight short stores for children, I would be reluctant to read most of the stories to anyone under the age of ten. I found the stories themselves to be a rather mixed bag both in terms of theme and quality. My favorite by far was "The Invisible Giant."

The Shadow Builder
How 7 Went Mad
Lies and Lilies
The Castle of the King
The Wondrous Child

While definitely not Stoker's best work, I enjoyed reading it all the same.

..or Bram Stoker's Fairy Tales

After having read The Castle of the King in a large collection of ghost stories, I just had to check this book out. I'm willing to be that virtually everyone looking into this book is familiar with his more famous work, Dracula. I was more expecting, as the back of the book says, a few tales of terror. That's not what you'll get.

To put it in a nutshell... imagine the guy who wrote Dracula wrote some Fairy Tales as well. It's exactly what you would expect.

The result is a bunch of stories, ranging from the flagrantly biblical (The Rose Prince) to the unbelievably dark (The Shadow Maker, the Castle of the King). The stories tend towards sad rather than frightening, and if you're a normal parent, you might not want to read them to your children.... fortunately for me, I'm not a normal parent. Crazy parents rejoice!

About the Author
Sherwood Anderson (1876 –1941) was an American novelist and short story writer. His most enduring work is the short story sequence Winesburg, Ohio. Writers he has influenced include Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, J. D. Salinger, and Amos Oz, among others. Anderson's first novel, Windy McPherson's Son, was published in 1916, followed, three years later, by his second major work, Marching Men. However, he is most famous for the collection of interrelated short stories, which were published in 1919, known as Winesburg, Ohio. He claimed that "Hands", the opening story, was the first "real" story he ever wrote. Although his short stories were very successful, Anderson felt the need to write novels. In 1920, he published Poor White, which was rather successful. In 1923, Anderson published Many Marriages, the themes of which he would carry over into much of his later writing. The novel had its detractors, but the reviews were, on the whole, positive. F. Scott Fitzgerald, for example, considered Many Marriages to be Anderson's finest novel. Beginning in 1924, Anderson lived in the historic Pontalba Apartments (540-B St. Peter Street) adjoining Jackson Square in New Orleans. There, he and his wife entertained William Faulkner, Carl Sandburg, Edmund Wilson and other literary luminaries. Of Faulkner, in fact, he wrote his ambiguous and moving short story "A Meeting South," and, in 1925, wrote Dark Laughter, a novel rooted in his New Orleans experience. Although the book is now out of print (and was satirized by Ernest Hemingway in his novel The Torrents of Spring), it was Anderson's only bestseller.

A Triumph of Short-Story Writing

Anderson is a wonderful writer, evoking a particular America that maybe never existed as such an actualised, coherent place in the world, but certainly did exist as a unified literary landscape: clear bright skies, verdant hills, vast flat plains where -- on a clear day -- the eye can see forever: the people so small against it all, battling through their sinewy lives and clinging to whatever looks like hope for as long as they can hold on. Sad, poignant, and sometimes hilarious, with particularly gorgeous character portraits.

Long read but tried to be as comprehensive as possible!

This book is all encompassing: it has test taking tips, 5 secret keys, covers BASIC principles in genetics, micro, pharmacology, behavioral science, immunology and more (these are random principles every med student should be aware of before taking the USMLE exam), and then breaks it down according to each of the 11 body systems and goes more in depth in each of the systems. There is a general system like Respiratory system, for example, and just different headings. These headings include "Embryology of the airways and lungs, Pulmonary maturation, Changes that occur in the lung at the moment of birth, Control of Respiration, Legionnaires' disease, and more." So essentially, in every body system, it covers every discipline like embryology, development, microbiology, pathology, and more.

There are several drawbacks however. One is that there are a bunch of words and all the pages look the same. There is no table of contents in each body system, so if you are looking for a specific topic you have to find it. There are barely any pictures, diagrams, and tables. No color. Everything is black and white.

SUMMARY: Contains a lot good information, could be organized better, no colored pictures, no glossary

Side note (Read til the very end) - I had a problem with purchasing this product. I contacted the seller and the seller gave me another link to purchase the product. To no avail, the link didn't direct me to the product. But the seller kept trying and eventually sent me a link where I was able to purchase the product. The seller was very helpful in addressing my concerns and was very understanding. I would recommend this seller.

This is very similar to the organization we see in other prep books like First Aid

The book covers a lot of basic test taking strategies, basic principles in topics such as immunology, genetics, pharmacology, microbiology, behavioral health. In addition to covering those more "basic science" subjects, it also goes into the major body systems most medical students will cover in their first two years including cardiovascular system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, and many others. Within each body system chapter, it has a section on embryology, pathology, microbiology, et al. This is very similar to the organization we see in other prep books like First Aid.

Where this book fails in comparison to its competitors like First Aid is that it's pretty much all text and the organization isn't as clear (i.e. table of contents and such). This makes searching for topics more difficult. Another thing is, you cannot reach the vast majority of learners who require a visual component to their understanding of material. It's 2016 and in order to have this book be a mainstream and universal text for USMLE prep you MUST have excellent diagrams and high definition color photos that not only cover material but SHOW the material. The USMLE exam is becoming more multimedia-based and to not account for this in the text is a major oversight. If these publishers want to make their product worthwhile in a sea of excellent board-prep materials, they need to account for the most recent updates to the exam and reach the students in a creative fashion. There's just so much competition out there and medical students get pretty dogmatic about which materials we like to use throughout our studies. Further, this text is more expensive than the bible of board prep books, First Aid. The price must be competitive or else students will opt for more bang for their buck. This book ain't it.

SUMMARY: Covers everything you'll need to know for the exam pretty much. However, it could have better organization and titles and also needs to incorporate colored diagrams and photos.

Bottom Line: Great supplemental resource and saves time

After reading some of the less positive reviews about this product, I was hesitant to order this but I am very happy I did! I think the reason some people did not find this book super helpful is because they are using it incorrectly. I use this book strictly as a supplement to my studying. It is not meant to be the only resource.

This book is SO helpful for when I need to quickly access information or an explanation of a concept or term. Before getting this book, I would have to sift through Google results and Wikipedia explanations until I found a clinical/medicine-based explanation of a concept. It is so much easier to flip to the relevant section of the book and see exactly the information I need (and nothing else). It is a huge time-saver!

The book is really well organized and makes finding what you need very easy. The style of the text is simple and minimalistic, which I find to be better in a resource book of this type.

Additionally, it is certainly reasonably priced for the amount of use I get from it (especially in light of the prices I have paid for some of my other prep books!).

The book arrived on time and in perfect condition, so I would certainly order from this seller again.

In the 1990s, the author had twenty-one articles published, both nationally and internationally. After gaining an honours degree in Geosciences, doing post-graduate study in Occupational Health and Fitness, and earning a masters degree in Science Communication, he developed an interest for simple communication. A passion for writing again emerged, and combining various interests in fine art, museum exhibition display, biology, geology, poetry, and the mystical led to the story of Peter: A Darkened Fairytale. The author still retains a childlike vision of the world, which is conveyed throughout his books.

Peter – Goblin Power must be read aloud. The poem rolls off the tongue in a delightful way and sets the stage for anyone who reads to children to explore the prose tale at the end of the book. Peter - Goblin Power is a beautifully written book that contains warm imagery bringing the reader close to the author's clear conception of his fantasy reality.
I particularly enjoyed reviewing this book before my grandchildren visit in the coming weeks as I build up a collection of bedtime stories to read to them. They are just the right age for this kind of exposure to poetry and fantasy. Quests are definitely the way to entrance young readers. Exploration that rewards courage and curiosity is the name of the game.

Mystically fasinating.

It is amazing how William O'Brien can infuse these mystical creatures with dark magic and powers that will have you biting your nails as you turn pages. I have been completely captivated from the first book in the series...Peter: A Darkened Fairytale, and now anxiously wait for continuing saga of Peter's World. An imaginative and descriptive author, I recommend reading the series if you love fantasy with a little darkness. A massive 5 stars for an exemplary series.

Peter's Goblins - Short Poems and Tiny Thoughts is a fantastical collection of short poems based upon the surreal, magical story Peter: A Darkened Fairytale.

As one of Peter's most enthusiastic fans, I know you'll enjoy this set of Peter tales. The world of "Peter: A Darkened Fairytale" is one to which a reader can return again and again, and always some new and worthwhile nugget of wisdom. I recommend all the books in the Peter series. In Goblin Power, the rascally goblins are up to mischief. They wield their goblin magic, stealing artifacts and people, even fairies. Stay well away from anyone with a skull lantern, or they'll grab you.

You'd best read up on Peter's goblins before they do. The "Peter's Goblins" set consists of three volumes, so more dark goblins will shortly come your way.
