The Frangipani Hotel: Fiction, by Violet Kupersmith

An extraordinarily compelling debut—ghost stories that grapple with the legacy of the Vietnam War

A beautiful young woman appears fully dressed in an overflowing bathtub at the Frangipani Hotel in Hanoi. A jaded teenage girl in Houston befriends an older Vietnamese gentleman she discovers naked behind a dumpster. A trucker in Saigon is asked to drive a dying young man home to his village. A plump Vietnamese-American teenager is sent to her elderly grandmother in Ho Chi Minh City to lose weight, only to be lured out of the house by the wafting aroma of freshly baked bread. In these evocative and always surprising stories, the supernatural coexists with the mundane lives of characters who struggle against the burdens of the past.

Based on traditional Vietnamese folk tales told to Kupersmith by her grandmother, these fantastical, chilling, and thoroughly contemporary stories are a boldly original exploration of Vietnamese culture, addressing both the immigrant experience and the lives of those who remained behind. Lurking in the background of them all is a larger ghost—that of the Vietnam War, whose legacy continues to haunt us.

Violet Kupersmith’s voice is an exciting addition to the landscape of American fiction. With tremendous depth and range, her stories transcend their genre to make a wholly original statement about the postwar experience.

From Booklist
Set in Vietnam and the U.S., these stories integrate the darker elements of Vietnamese folklore and myth. The nine pieces of short fiction feature a variety of characters who come from different economic and educational backgrounds and often spotlight relations among family members. In “Reception,” the slowly unfolding narrative encompasses the family running the Hotel Frangipani, an American businessman, and the beautiful manifestation of a local spirit. Internal tensions among characters propel narratives and create a suspenseful atmosphere. “Guests” features an American woman employed by the consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, her Canadian lover, and the people, local and expatriate, who surround them. Readers get to decide the outcome of several of the stories. One with an ambiguous ending, “Red Veil,” begins in a Catholic convent, alternates between modern and historic Vietnam, and spotlights the tragedy of two sisters, a new stepmother, and the revenge of a human channel for the spirits of the dead. This first collection introduces a writer to watch and belongs in any library serving a short story readership. --Ellen Loughran

Review
“[A] subversively clever debut collection . . . These stories—playful, angry, at times legitimately scary—demonstrate a subtlety of purpose that belies [Kupersmith’s] youth.”—The New York Times Book Review

“A series of magical, beautiful, modern stories, all based on traditional Vietnamese folktales, this is the product of a great writer who invokes the ghosts of the land that was left behind.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“[A] sparkling debut. The stories in this collection by Violet Kupersmith fuse traditional Vietnamese ghost stories with the ghost of the Vietnam War and update them as they play out for those who remained in the country and those who fled. . . . These are stories written from wildly different perspectives, and yet the ghosts feel vitally familiar. There’s a lightness of touch to these stories, which are playful and wise, an astonishing feat for a young writer who graduated from Mount Holyoke College three years ago.”—Chicago Tribune (editor’s choice)

“Violet Kupersmith has woven together culture, tradition, family, and ghosts to create a series of short stories that are as fresh as they are mesmerizing. These stories will haunt you long after the last words have drifted off the page.”—Lisa See

“In this auspicious volume, Kupersmith has reshaped and womanhandled traditional Vietnamese folktales that her grandmother told her into a wildly energetic, present-tense fusillade of short stories. . . . In perhaps the most pungent story here, a young woman who works the graveyard shift stocking shelves at Kwon’s World Grocery in suburban Houston befriends an old man she finds standing naked beside a Dumpster. His problem: He occasionally turns into a fourteen-foot python. ‘I am just a very old man who is sometimes a python,’ the man tells the woman. ‘But you, my child, are a creature far more complex.’ One might suspect that Kupersmith, who is working on her first novel, is that creature.”—Ben Dickinson, Elle

“[A] compelling brand of magic realism . . . enthralling stories . . . a collection teeming with detail and personality.”—Asian Review of Books

“Chilling and lovely . . . Kupersmith has combined traditional storytelling with a post-modern sense of anxiety and darkness, and the result is captivating.”—Bookreporter

“The stories shimmer with life. The heat and tumult of Vietnam’s cities are palpable, and the awed wonderment of humans confronted with supernatural occurrences is artfully conveyed. These polished stories mark Kupersmith, who is in her early twenties, as one to watch.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Warning: [The Frangipani Hotel] might haunt you. . . . Young Kupersmith, not yet twenty-five years old, seems to be channeling the literary spirit of Isak Dinesen in these Vietnamese tales as they morphed into completely up-to-date short stories. . . . Kupersmith has the same ability as Dinesen’s to turn ordinary events into magical dreamworlds, sometimes even before the reader notices the shift. . . . These short stories originated in tales her Vietnamese grandmother told Kupersmith throughout her childhood. They take place now, in Vietnam and in Houston, with cellphones, low-level Texas hoodlums and drowned water sprites coexisting with ghosts returning from times long past. The naked seventy-year-old man hiding behind a Houston convenience store worries about a frightening metamorphosis he undergoes with increasing frequency.”—The Buffalo News

“Surgically precise and feverishly imaginative.”—Téa Obreht, author of The Tiger’s Wife

“What is most haunting in Kupersmith’s nine multilayered pieces are not the specters, whose tales are revealed as stories within stories, but the lingering loss and disconnect endured by the still living. . . . [A] mature-beyond-her-years debut.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“Each of the stories is replete with characters both fabulous and ordinary, stories out of this world and firmly rooted in it. Each is meticulously told by a storyteller talented and wise beyond her years.”—Shelf Awareness

“This first collection introduces a writer to watch and belongs in any library serving a short story readership.”—Booklist

“In this impressive debut, Violet Kupersmith displays a remarkable gift for voice and setting. Using history and horror, mystery and imagination, she has created this vivid collection of haunted and haunting stories. Highly recommended.”—Karen Joy Fowler, author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves and The Jane Austen Book Club

“These stories start out humbly, workaday, and would be happy to go on that way but are surprised by the entry of some unearthly demon. Then our great joy is to watch them try to carry on with their simple, daily world, in spite of the transfiguring radiance of the supernatural. Kupersmith is more than a powerful writer: She’s already been admitted into the secret circle of Isak Dinesen and Isaac Babel and Sylvia Townsend Warner. She’s a true storyteller, and a demon herself.”—George Dawes Green, founder of The Moth and author of The Caveman’s Valentine and Ravens

“Everyone will talk about how young, how mature and talented beyond her years Violet Kupersmith is, but in reading these stories of ghosts both ancestral and infernal, you’ll become convinced Kupersmith herself is of the spirit world—transcending time, nationality, gender, and place. Rarely does a writer of any age conjure a book so deftly funny and yet so deadly serious. Read it, remember it, and then breathlessly await her next one.”—Sheri Holman, author of Witches on the Road Tonight and The Dress Lodger

“Violet Kupersmith writes about both the Old World and the New World with an understanding beyond her years. These stories weave beautifully together to give us a rich tapestry of human history, and present an exciting new voice.”—Yiyun Li, author of Kinder Than Solitude

“The haunted world of The Frangipani Hotel teems with sensuous and exuberant life. Terror and wonder walk hand in hand. There are ghosts in the air (and in the lake), but there’s nothing insubstantial about them. These ghosts are boisterous and malign, driven by powerful passions even they don’t understand. Whether they issue from the war-torn past, the insatiable appetite of nature, or the sinister terrain of the human unconscious is anybody’s guess. One thing is certain: They’re not going away until the reader too is entirely entranced and captivated.”—Valerie Martin, author of The Ghost of the Mary Celeste, Mary Reilly, and Property, winner of the Orange Prize

The Frangipani Hotel
By Brendan Moody
Too often the literary ghost story is something old-fashioned and obvious, neither chilling nor insightful. That's what makes Violet Kupersmith's debut collection so impressive: its nine stories are at once spooky and unsettling in a more profound sense. Promotional material for THE FRANGIPANI HOTEL has focused on the latter quality, which might give the impression that this is one of those collections where the ghosts are merely quaint metaphors, but fear not: they have teeth. Kupersmith is particularly good at those gradually increasing hints of something amiss that are part of the counterintuitive pleasure of being scared by our entertainments. She also has a pleasantly light touch, avoiding the dreary explanations that drag down workmanlike ghost stories. Yhe otherworldly creatures here may be drawn from Vietnamese legend, but Kupersmith wisely avoids exposition, allowing their sinister appetites and shadowy affinities to remain as mysterious as the supernatural in fiction should be. This blend of classical style and unfamiliar subject matter is just what many ghost story enthusiasts will be looking for.

But of course the promotional material is right: there's more to these stories than the spirits. Kupersmith's prose is on the flat side, with language that's sometimes casual or compressed to the point of inelegance, especially in third-person stories where there's no narrator to cover it. But she knows how to capture a setting without belaboring its details, and what's more important, she can cut right to the heart of whatever issue she's dealing with. As the daughter of an American father and a Vietnamese refugee mother, she draws on the dark history between those two nations, but what stands out about THE FRANGIPANI HOTEL is not its organizing principle but the range of things it can do within that framework. Attempting an overall summary of the collection is fruitless: each story has its particular concerns. One can note parallels, for example between the opening and closing stories, "Boat Story" and "Descending Dragon," both of which deal with Vietnamese women, their American descendents, and the distances immigration does and does not create. But beneath that pat summary are two works very different in style and tone, with additional themes that don't overlap so neatly. So instead of generalizing further, I'm going to focus on a couple individual stories.

"Guests" is perhaps the most unsettling story in the collection, which is especially impressive as it's also the least overtly supernatural. There may or may not not be anything otherworldly happening, but the portrait of an emotionally dislocated and isolated American working in Vietnam evokes an atmosphere of bleak disquiet that's difficult to shake off. Stories about Westerners unable to cope with life outside their bubble are common enough. But "Guests" renders its protagonist, a young woman whose desires are obscure even to her, with enough psychological insight to transcend the culture-clash trope: she's not a metaphor for the distance between "West" and "East" but a person with her own issues. The story's length allows the full peculiarity and buried desperation of her existence to unfold, as interlocking motifs and images create potent associations both visceral and thematic. Ultimately it's a story about the terrible things we do in service to the often self-defeating desire to make a connection. "Reception" is more obviously ghostly in its plot, with a haunting final image, but what makes it truly memorable is the jaded narrator, whose biting sarcasm (Kupersmith has a flair for dark humor) can't quite hide a deep frustration with what seems to him a second-rate life with a second-rate family in a second-rate country. This resentment of his homeland, as a place somehow synthetic and used-up, makes for a striking contrast with the outsider's perspective in "Guests" (though I should note that not all Kupersmith's protagonists take a dim view of Vietnam). A mysterious guest at the family hotel where he works may offer an escape from the drudgery, or a reminder of what's already irretrievably lost.

If there's something other than the Vietnam War that links these stories, it may be that sense of irretrievable loss. Kupersmith's protagonists want to recover something they used to possess, or to escape from something that possessed them, but true deliverance is unavailable. Even when you get away from a monster, you can't get away from the memory of it. The truly great ghost story is frightening in a sense that has nothing to do with tingles down the spine and the hair on the back of your neck: it tells us that the universe is defined by tragedy and futility, that ghosts are the currents in Fitzgerald's ceaseless river. Much has been made of the fact that Violet Kupersmith, who wrote the first versions of these stories while she was an undergraduate, is very young; the idea of the wunderkind is a powerful one. But solid craftsmanship at an early age isn't all that surprising. What's remarkably mature about Kupersmith's work is the vision behind it, one that delves into human frailties large and small, and confronts circularity and failure without blinking. THE FRANGIPANI HOTEL is that rarity among debuts: a book that will make its author's reputation even if she never publishes another word. Don't miss it.

Utterly original
By Daffy Du
It's hard to believe that author Violet Kupersmith only graduated from college in 2011 and that The Frangipani Hotel is her first book. This collection of short stories is so mature, confident and accomplished that a writer three times her age would be proud to claim it as his/her own. That she wrote many while still in college makes them even more remarkable.

Each of the stories has an element of the supernatural, real or imagined, and all are reportedly based on traditional Vietnamese stories. Kupersmith is a fluent--and fluid--storyteller who knows how to capture your attention and then take you in directions you don't expect. Ordinary people leading humdrum lives cross paths with malevolent spirits, grateful shapeshifters, vengeful ghosts, yet often those encounters are subtle, fleeting and/or perplexing. Set both in Vietnam and America, her tales are haunted as much by the two countries' shared past as they are by the other-worldly creatures who inhabit them.

Reading The Frangipani Hotel is like taking a vacation from the everyday, and I highly recommend it. Five enthusiastic stars and votes of confidence in this young, extraordinarily talented writer. Violet Kupersmith is definitely someone to watch.

If you like Jhumpa Lahiri, you will like this book
By The Write Edge
A young man meets a mysterious woman in his place of employment, and she alters his perception of reality. A truck driver gives a young boy a ride and discovers that his passenger’s motives don’t include gratitude. A young woman helps an elderly gentleman, only to discover that he lives a secret life. Violet Kupersmith gives all of her characters the background of the Vietnam War in her enriching debut with her short story collection The Frangipani Hotel.

The collection opens with the charming “Boat Story,” a conversation between a grandmother and her grandchild about the grandmother’s migration to the new world. “Guests” lets readers peek into the life of a woman working in the U.S. Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City; she interviews people requesting visas to and dual citizenship with the States. A poet, a calligrapher, and a guitarist come together for their weekly meeting, only to discover that one of them has hidden a secret for many years in “One-Finger.” In “Reception,” the story that gives the collection its name, the main character meets an uninvited guest in the hotel that his family owns and where he works; he spends several days trying to keep her a secret while simultaneously trying to discover her identity.

Kupersmith shares in these stories and the five others in the book her Vietnamese background. Her grandmother shared folk tales and stories of ghosts with Kupersmith who, in turn, used those folk tales and ghost stories to provide the bare bones for her work. The result: stories that give readers the opportunity to learn about another culture while maintaining the universality of life situations.

All of the stories contain treasures of Vietnam’s culture: the street vendor who sells one character buns from a cart; the elderly mother expecting her daughter to visit in the nursing home on Lunar New Year; the man who calls an attractive woman “little sister.” Amid these gems of another country, however, Kupersmith gives readers plenty of room to feel comfortable. A young woman does what she can to avoid a family wedding with annoying relatives. A nun mentors a novitiate by sharing her own weaknesses. A girlfriend worries that her boyfriend’s ex-lovers will lure him away. Kupersmith uses these situations and many more to relate to readers and offer them common ground.

I highly recommend The Frangipani Hotel for anyone who enjoys well-written prose. Clearly Kupersmith’s talent has only begun to stretch itself. Readers can pore over her stories several times and find something new on every read. For those people who enjoy Jhumpa Lahiri’s work, make room on your bookshelves for Violet Kupersmith and The Frangipani Hotel.

Review
''G. K. Chesterton's tales [are] of the unassuming Catholic priest who claims that his work at the confessional (where he has to do 'next to nothing but hear men's real sins') puts him in an excellent position to solve the bizarre crimes that come his way in pre-First World War England . . . The unassuming cleric, whose humble conviction that his God will eventually triumph over the souls of even the most evil of criminals, is the quiet but insistent heartbeat of these unusual exercises in detective fiction.'' --Sunday Times (London)

About the Author
Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

The Best Mystery Write EVER
By Patricia Harrelson
I read this on the recommendation of my 14 year old grandson who claims Chesterton is the best mystery writer EVER! My grandson just might be right. Clearly Chesterton is a highly intelligent story-crafter. This collection of short stories about Father Brown kept me awake and alert and ALWAYS surprised regarding the outcome. There was nothing formulaic or predictable in these stories. Father Brown is delightful in a Columbo fashion (perhaps the TV detective was modeled after him), and his sleuthing is remarkably unique. I loved Chesterton's use of language too. His sentences are long and luscious and his vocabulary makes reading a delicious experience. I must say, I'm quite happy to know that a 14 year old finds Chesterton so exceptional.

Introducing Father Brown
By Michele L. Worley
The 12 stories herein can of course be found in THE COMPLETE FATHER BROWN, and THE ANNOTATED INNOCENCE OF FATHER BROWN. This is the first Brown collection, which introduces not only Father Brown himself but Flambeau, the daring thief. Father Brown worked on Flambeau during their early confrontations, and eventually persuaded him to give up his life of crime. He became Father Brown's friend and sometime sidekick, and appears in three-quarters of the stories herein, in one capacity or another.

"The Blue Cross" - The great detective Valentin knows that Flambeau the thief has selected a little English priest as his target, since the priest has been entrusted with a valuable cross set with sapphires. But when Valentin begins tracking the priest across the city, a very odd pattern of incidents begins to emerge.

"The Secret Garden" - Father Brown is a dinner guest in Valentin's home.

"The Queer Feet" - 'The Twelve True Fishermen', meeting for their annual fish dinner at a small, exclusive restaurant, saw the usual count of waiters - but one had died hours before! Father Brown (called in earlier for the waiter's dying confession and last rites) unravels a spectacular caper.

"The Flying Stars" - Flambeau's last crime (as noted in the 1st paragraph of the story), cited as an example of his love of artistically matching settings with crimes. His confrontation with Father Brown resonates nicely with the preceding story's metaphor of Brown having him on a line like a fish.

"The Invisible Man" - Locked-room mystery. The inventor was found murdered in his flat, but witnesses say that nobody could have gone past them without being seen.

"The Honour of Israel Gow" - This story actually takes place *after* "The Wrong Shape". The Earl of Glengyle was a hermit - and after finding some very odd circumstances in the Earl's home after his death, Flambeau and Father Brown begin to fear that Satanism is involved.

"The Wrong Shape" - The writer was a bad husband and an unpleasant man, and the beautifully penned suicide note seemed almost too good to be true.

"The Sins of Prince Saradine" - Flambeau takes Father Brown along to collect on the prince's invitation, sent to him during his criminal career, to visit if he were to become respectable, since he greatly admired Flambeau's stunt of once arranging for one policeman to arrest another, when both were looking for *him*.

"The Hammer of God" - The last two Bohuns are the curate, who pursues the beauty of his church, and the colonel, who chases women. But if he managed to catch the blacksmith's wife, it may well have been the death of him.

"The Eye of Apollo" - Locked-room mystery. Father Brown came to visit Flambeau, who has taken an office in a new building. Pauline Stacey, a rich idealist in a neighbouring office, fell down the empty elevator shaft that same day - when nobody else, apparently, was in the building.

"The Sign of the Broken Sword" - Why has Father Brown taken Flambeau to every monument to the memory of the great general, finally ending here at his grave? "Where does a wise man hide a leaf? In a forest." Someone, unfortunately, once took that saying to heart.

"The Three Tools of Death" - With three weapons visible on the scene, why did the victim die by a fall from a window?

A wonderful collection of stories
By Axver
G. K. Chesterton had a writing ability that is nothing short of extraordinary. He could craft landscapes, settings, and locations with vivid textures, and possessed a cunning knack that made the ordinary seem thoroughly outlandish and the peculiar rather tame. This collection of short mysteries aptly shows off his skill as a writer; whereas most authors would use an entire novel to build tension, cultivate atmosphere, and weave a complex mystery, Chesterton could do all that in a few brief pages - and at a much higher level of quality too! Reading this book is like reading twelve beautifully crafted novels in one, such is the quality.

I won't spoil the stories for you; reading this book is a rewarding journey for the imagination, meeting many characters fantastic in their normalcy or surprisingly believable and realistic in their peculiarity, visiting locations stunningly brought to life with a writing skill that is second to none, and delving into mysterious events that are often confusing, complex, and entertaining for the brain. Don't pick this book up if you want some pedestrian tales; pick it up if you want first-class storytelling that will keep you both guessing and thinking.

Description:

It was such a charming home!—my new one; a fine great house, with pictures, and delicate decorations, and rich furniture, and no gloom anywhere, but all the wilderness of dainty colors lit up with flooding sunshine; and the spacious grounds around it, and the great garden—oh, greensward, and noble trees, and flowers, no end! And I was the same as a member of the family; and they loved me, and petted me, and did not give me a new name, but called me by my old one that was dear to me because my mother had given it me—Aileen Mavourneen. She got it out of a song; and the Grays knew that song, and said it was a beautiful name...

About the Author
Mark Twain (1835 –1910) was an American author and humorist. He is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later provide the setting for Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. He apprenticed with a printer. He also worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion's newspaper. After toiling as a printer in various cities, he became a master riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River, before heading west to join Orion. He was a failure at gold mining, so he next turned to journalism. While a reporter, he wrote a humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which proved to be very popular and brought him nationwide attention. His travelogues were also well-received. Twain had found his calling. He achieved great success as a writer and public speaker. His wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. However, he lacked financial acumen. Though he made a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he squandered it on various ventures, in particular the Paige Compositor, and was forced to declare bankruptcy. With the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers, however, he eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain worked hard to ensure that all of his creditors were paid in full, even though his bankruptcy had relieved him of the legal responsibility. Born during a visit by Halley's Comet, he died on its return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".

A great story about man's cruelty towards his dog
By Nick
Other reviewers have rated this poorly, and I want to correct that. The story is not a happy one, as most stories with pets are. This tale of a dog, who tries to do as his mother would do, saves the life of his master's baby and is abused by the father who is a scientist. The dog has a puppy of his own, and the puppy is used as an experimental dog by the scientist and put to sleep and buried. The dog, knowing that when you bury seeds they grow into something beautiful, hopes and waits for his baby's growing since the puppy too was buried in the soil.

The tale itself is about the cruelty that man and science had towards dogs at the time, and it's not for the faint of heart. It's also a testament to Twain's writing that he can take the tale of inhumanity towards Man's best friend and spin it into a heartbreaking narrative.

One of the great ones. . .
By grozny
Near the end of his life, Twain wrote stories that expressed his contempt for the cruelties, stupidities, and general brutishness of mankind. In this story, which goes well with The Mysterious Stranger, he contrasts man with dogs. Dogs have true morality and heroism, which doesn't stand a chance against man's "moral sense."

The reader who sees Twain as a children's author will be horrified at much of his work. Twain's humor is seldom meant to be jolly or forgiving. You can disagree with him (and hopefully survive the results of your naivite) but should not be surprised at what happens to the decent animals at the hands of humans.

Recommended as part of an excellent Twain collection Kindle is offering free (but stay away from the collections).

Can't get it out of my head
By Jodee Kulp
There are stories and then there are Dog Tales. Mark Twain writes early in the development of animal rights and he hits readers right between the eyes with his words through his character development. Spending a dollar on this moved more than a buck from my pocket book, it still rattles my soul as a positive dog trainer.
