Finding the Dark Underneath the Surface

The fourteen story collection of “Helsinki Noir” is the latest installment of the Akashic Noir Series, focusing around the Finnish capital. Edited by expat James Thompson, also a contributor, the stories range from dark and brutal to partially sunny and almost positive in overall tone.

The main characters of the stories generally are on the criminal side, including a few police officers, which slant the stories more to the dark side of the spectrum. Even when the main character is on the right side of the law, their perspective is darkened by their years fighting crime or living a psychologically scared life. If the tone of noir is meant to be dark, this collection definitely qualifies.

The further one gets into the books, the overall quality of the stories improves even though two of the best 5 stories appear early on in the volume. The characters and story structures are for nearly all excellent with only an exception there and there. If anything the biggest dislike of this book was amount of graphic sexual content that stressed my personal comfort zone.

Overall "Helsinki Noir" is a good collection of short stories that inclines towards being very good with only one exception. Not knowing what to expect, I was both surprised and disappointed with what I encountered in reading. Given the very dark tone of the majority of the stories, be prepared for some dark times. However if dark criminal stories are not your cup of tea then I suggest passing.

An Anthology Deserving a Finnish Summer

This city has always called to me, and not just because my grandparents were born here. The name rings in my mind. Helsingon. Helsinki: quite possibly the greatest place on Earth to live.
But every culture on Earth has its dark side. Finns call it kaamos: the darkness that comes in Fall and blankets the nation for half a year. This isn't a tourist guide. This is a guide to an underworld so few foreigners are able to see. James Thompson, rest his soul, was able to become part of it and explore it in his fiction (Snow Angels, Helsinki Blood, etc., all books I loved). He edited this collection wisely. There's great variety here. Some stories are sad, some darkly humorous in the Finnish transition, some set near the stock market and some in the slums of Kallio and northern Helsinki. The collection rings together wonderfully, retains a tight control on tone throughout, and is a great introduction to anything in this anthology: its editor, any of its authors (Jarkko Sipila, my favorite walking in, for one), and most of all, this majestic city and the nation it represents.

For Helsinki fans only

I've read stories by these authors. With a proper plot, whodone it or other, they are quite good. These stories are a bit brief for any kind of meat in the story. The one by Lehtolainen is merely cute. In another story a detective is ready to wrap up the story, which started with novel bodies, and desperately searches the internet for clues to avoid going outside. He find a clue and we are left with a short paragraph and THE END. These sort of unsatisfactory short stories are the major part of the book.

If Helsinki is your favorite scene for crimes, such as those of James Thompson the editor (now deceased), by all means buy the book. I would go for the other cities of the Akashic series instead.

About the Author
Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

Six powerful tales of race, class, and leprosy

The House of Pride, first published in 1912, is a collection of six short stories by Jack London, all of which take place in Hawaii. London traveled to Hawaii on at least three occasions, and it became the predominant setting for the writings of the second half of his career. He loved the climate and the landscape of the islands, and was fascinated by Polynesian history and culture.

London also liked writing about Hawaii because the setting gave him an opportunity to explore his favorite themes of race and class. He saw Hawaii as the ultimate melting pot, a South Pacific crossroads where people from all over the world came to mix, mingle, and interbreed. The white colonization of the islands also created a class struggle between the wealthy white traders, industrialists, and missionaries and the disenfranchised natives which formed their workforce. In the title selection, "The House of Pride," a wealthy son of missionaries is forced to deal with the newfound discovery that a half-breed he despises is actually his half brother. In "Aloha Oe," a teenage girl from the mainland falls in love for the first time. When she remembers, however, that her Romeo is of one-quarter native blood, she realizes that they can never be together. "Chun Ah Chun" is the rags-to-riches story of a Chinese peasant who, through relentless industriousness, becomes one of the wealthiest men on the islands. He is unable to find suitable husbands for his dozen daughters, however, because the eligible bachelors of the islands are unwilling to marry the daughter of a Chinese man. London handles the racism of his time matter-of-factly, alternately lamenting and mocking the discriminatory social conventions. Although London has occasionally been guilty of racial insensitivity in his works (see his portrayal of South Sea islanders in The Red One or South Sea Tales, for example), this book is free of such prejudice. He had a genuine admiration and respect for the Hawaiian people, which is quite evident in these stories.

In addition to his obsession with race and class issues, for whatever reason, London was fascinated by leprosy. The disease was present among the Hawaiian population during London's time. Infected persons were confined to the leper colony on Molokai, which London once visited. In his stories London displays contradictory motives toward leprosy, on the one hand striving to offer an enlightened and educated perspective on the disease, while on the other hand revelling in the depiction of its hideous effects. In "Good-Bye, Jack!," two wealthy white men debate the virtues of the leper colony, but their detached attitudes are shaken when the disease hits close to home. "Koolau the Leper," the best story in the book, takes place in the secluded Kalalau Valley on the island of Kauai, where the brave and defiant Koolau leads a band of lepers in rebellion against the police and army bent on capturing them and shipping them off to Molokai. In "The Sheriff of Kona," another excellent story, the title character, whose job it is to apprehend lepers, begins to show signs of having contracted the disease himself. These three stories all contain profoundly moving moments, as the characters are confronted by the disease or threatened with lifelong confinement. In London's skillful hands these life and death struggles are rendered as extremely gripping and poignant scenes.

Though I have often considered London's South Sea stories to be inferior to his Klondike tales, these six strong pieces have proven me wrong. The House of Pride is an excellent collection, on a par with some of this master storyteller's best work.

This is everything you'd expect of a Jack London collection of tales. The characters are well developed, even for short stories. The description is vivid. The energy is palpable.

Very entertaining, if somewhat depressing (leprosy).

This book was helpful in preparing for the 038 exam. It is the only study material that I used, and I blew away the test. However, the content of the book was very generalized, whereas the test questions were very specific. I feel that what helped me most on the exam was simply life experience. Having bought and sold homes and vehicles, invested money, etc. in life, answering the related test questions was easy. For college-age students who have never had such experiences, the questions might prove more difficult and the material offered in the book wouldn't necessarily be enough to prepare you.

Kindle Edition is Very Handy

Because it's difficult to have a book with me all of the time, it's handy to have the Kindle edition whenever I need to study for the upcoming CSW exam. Of course it's not as functional as a real workbook (no ability to fold pages, make notes in the margins, etc.), but it's very handy during those times when you just need to study and only your phone is available.

A great text for anyone wanting to learn more about wine

A fantastic read whether you are preparing for certification or not. It provides a great review of grapes, terroir and winemaking, covers the wine regions of the world and includes several maps that can be easily viewed on a tablet. I would recommend this book to anyone interested to learn more about wine.

The mental activities to improve comprehension, the physical ways to improve comprehension, and the daily activities to improve comprehension are the most leading topics through which you can speed up your learning speed. i just read this book and find the new ways to read quicker and save some time for hobby and family. I never get bored in reading this book because this book contains the interesting challenges and tasks that keeps my interest at every moment. I love to read and when I read fiction I can fly through it. However, when I have to read non-fiction I just can't read it very quickly. I bought this book to learn some techniques on speed reading. The book is very helpful. The author explains what speed reading is and also techniques to help you with your speed reading. The author also included daily habits to help your reading skills. I have seen an improvement in my non-fiction reading speed.

The book was good but there was no attachment of the code to access online and for the mobile,. I've searched for it in every page including the inner portion of the cover, still, there was no sticker or attachment aside from the CD,. So I wasnt able to access anything about the mobile and online

DON'T BUNDLE WITH "Strategies, Practice, & Review"

This book is great. It's helping a lot so far. I'll test later this year. Preparing early. I accidentally purchased this with the "NCLEX-RN 2015-2016, Strategies, Practice, & Review" not realizing they were the same book. Only difference between them is that the PREMIER version has extra practice test material. Other than that... they're word for word the exact same. Wish i had noticed that before buying the other version of the book. Oops.

Content review is lacking; use this only as an adjunct.

I recently took the NCLEX-RN and passed in 75 questions. I used this book in addition to purchasing the online Hurst review. This book isn't that expensive, so it is worth giving it a try. However, if deciding between review courses (which are much more expensive), then I would pick the Hurst review over Kaplan. From what I can tell, Kaplan focuses mainly on question taking whereas Hurst focuses on content. After having taken the NCLEX, I can honestly say that your time is better spent focusing on content. If you don't know your content, then strategies aren't going to be very helpful unless it is a low level question - and these aren't going to help you pass! I would brush up on content using the Hurst review and then go through this book to finish off your prep work.

LOVE this book and her writing!

This collection of short stories is amazingly well written. Hailing from jamaica, i identified with some of the stories and the characters - and the writing drew me right in to my childhood memories. Peta Gaye Nash is an amazing author and I am really looking forward to reading any of her new work. Beautifully written, the characters are real, deep and tell stories about the things you and I go through every day. I am a huge fan and am anxiously awaiting any new work. I know whose has a collection of childrens' books also which I have given as gifts and were very well loved and received. Great book!!!

This book is wonderfully written and an easy read

I Too Hear the Drums is a true page-turner. This intriguing compilation of short stories provides a glimpse into 'island life' and all that can occur when you mix all the socio-economic and political factors involved with living on an island.
This book is wonderfully written and an easy read. I would highly recommend it!
