Something for Everyone

In this unusual collection of fiction, ranging in length from a one-page short-short story to the novella that ends the book, author H.D. Greaves demonstrates a variety of unique narrative perspectives, as well as an adept use of the English language. Most particularly, he is an expert in setting the mood of each story through a careful choice of words and sentence structure.
The stories span the past and present in locales both imaginary and real, embracing humor and irony, intrigue and suspense, and the whole gamut of human affect from sorrow to joy. Characters range from young to old and include animals and even - in an amazing short story called The Cuckoo's Lament - the cuckoo in a cuckoo clock!
A novelist, Greaves is at his very best in the longer stories and the novella, which give him more room to develop situations and characters. My favorite short stories were Turandot's Ukulele and Going Barefoot into Paradise, but the real tour de force is the novella The Witch of Tabaquite, which is set in the West Indies and is not to be missed!
This is Greaves' initial short story collection, and he has taken the form and offered an intriguing potpourri of something for everyone.
