Must-buy for serious GRE studiers

As a GRE tutor who thinks about this stuff for a living, I urge you to get both of these books.
Why? One simple reason: these are REAL GRE questions: 150 verbal ones, and 150 math ones.
"But wait, Vince! Aren't there way more questions in other GRE books?"
Yes, there are. But here's the thing... quality trumps quantity every single time. Real GRE questions are much more convoluted, complex, and nuanced than any other company's. Also, real GRE questions play by the same consistent, fair rules that the questions on the real GRE do. That's why it's so important that these questions are part of your prep.
Yes, you may need other sources of questions to increase your experience level (I like Manhattan Prep's). But make sure you master all the real ETS questions, which is the best way to prepare for the real GRE questions you will be facing on test day

I'm a Harvard graduate, 99% GRE scorer, and professional GRE tutor (16 years experience), and I'm fairly obsessed with this test. In fact, I still take the GRE at least once a year (last exam: 169V / 166Q / 6AWA).
As many others have already indicated, you need these books because they are the real deal. After many years of receiving scant practice material from ETS, I am relieved to say that ETS has now provided enough official materials for a nearly full preparation for the GRE.
I say "nearly" full because 2 CATs (computer adaptive tests) is not enough. The physical books are a nice asset, as are the paper-based practice tests, but for a computer adaptive test, you have to spend lots of time preparing on a computer. For this purpose I prefer to buy a book from the Manhattan Prep GRE series, in order to gain access to its 6 online CATs.
Yes, the answer explanations in these books can sometimes be severely lacking, or in the case of the PowerPrep tests, nonexistent, which is part of why hiring a professional tutor can be helpful. However, for the disciplined and resourceful self-studier, the Official Guide to the GRE, these 2 supplemental guides, the 2 (invaluable!) PowerPrep II CATs, a good vocab guide or two (ahem), a strategy guide (avoid Kaplan) and some third-party CATs should do the trick.
Don't forget to purchase the Official Guide, which has two additional paper practice tests, as well as more practice questions and a test overview. To save money, you can buy the Official GRE Super Power Pack, of which I've also written a very detailed customer review: Official GRE Super Power Pack

Worth the purchase

Purchase this for preparation for the GRE. You can get most of the material online at the ets website, but I wanted to have the material to review. The material was very similar to the actual GRE and I believe it was very useful.
