About the Author
Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (24 July 1878 – 25 October 1957) was an Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays.

New Gods, Same Old Flavor

Herein the reader is introduced to MANA-YOOD-SUSHAI, who created all the lesser gods to play amongst the worlds. There is Kib, creator of all life, and Mung, who takes it away with but a signing of his hands. Meet Sish, the lord and master of Time, and Skarl the Drummer, whose beating can be heard throughout the heavens. Slid is also here, who frolics within the currents of countless rivers and rides the foam atop the waves of all the seas. There are also stories of the lesser home gods to be found, as well as the priests and prophets of Pegana.

Naturally, this isn't a book that presents a story with a beginning, middle, or end. It is really just snippets of history and gods of the land. You can't really read it one chapter at a time, it has to be read all the way through for the reader to get a complete sense of its grandeur. It stretches from the very beginning of time to its end and then back again. After you're done, you don't remember much of the details of the individual stories, but the sense of wonder remains.

This is the first installment of a five book cycle (followed by Time and the Gods, The Sword of Welleran, A Dreamer's Tale, and The Book of Wonder) concerning the fictional world of Pegana. Even though these stories were written nearly a century ago, they have had a great influence upon such well known writers as H.P. Lovecraft, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Neil Gaiman, as well as countless others. Dunsany's tales also rank up there with William Morris' and George MacDonald's for creating one of the first self-contained fantasy worlds and an accompanying imaginary mythology. (Although I've always hated the term "imaginary mythology." Aren't all mythologies imaginary to one degree or another? - not that that detracts from their power or legitimacy.)

Wildside Press has done a great service by reprinting most of the books in this series. I do wish, however, that a collected edition would be made available complete with annotations. (Not even Chaosium's "The Complete Pegana" reprints all the stories involved in the cycle.) As it stands now, readers will have to make do with these incredibly short individual volumes. This book, for instance, has 32 chapters, but is only 106 pages long. And that is using very large type and with a few pictures thrown in!

Nevertheless, it has often been said that some of the best things in life come in small packages. In this case, it is most definitely true.

Brilliant, foundational work of fantasy

This was Lord Dunsany's first published novel; it was also, I believe, the first completely invented mythology in the English language, pre-dating even Tolkien's Silmarillion by about a decade. Dunsany's influence on later fantasy has been incalculable, and this is the place to start.

The style is very elevated and high biblical / "mythic", -- far closer to Kahlil Gibran than modern fantasy -- and the intent more literary. High Art fantasy, not low art. The stories are very short, but very powerful and somewhat haunting. The best way to explain the book may simply be to give a sample, as Dunsany's style (though oft imitated) is so unique.

"And Limpang-Tung said: "The ways of the gods are strange. The flower groweth up and the flower fadeth away. This may be very clever of the gods. Man groweth from his infancy, and in a while he dieth. This may be very clever too.

"But the gods play with a strange scheme.

"I will send jests into the world and a little mirth. And while Death seems to thee as far away as the purple rim of hills; or sorrow as far off as rain in the blue days of summer, then pray to Limpang-Tung. But when thou growest old, or ere thou diest, pray not to Limpang-Tung, for thou becomest part of a scheme that he doth not understand.

"Go out into the starry night, and Limpang-Tung will dance with thee who danced since the gods were young, the god of mirth and of melodious minstrels. Or offer up a jest to Limpang-Tung; only pray not in thy sorrow to Limpang-Tung, for he saith of sorrow: 'It may be very clever of the gods, but he doth not understand.'"

If you're interested in fantasy, you should read this, especially since it's free; Dunsany's influenced everyone from Lovecraft and Howard to Gaiman and Zelazny, and if you want to be familiar with the fantasy genre, he should be part of your bookshelf. It's a little tough going due to the style, but it's still very much worth reading.

Great read: no dust jacket but wonderful quality.

This book is an excellent read, full of mixed mythology, comparable of H.P. Lovecraft's work. Old gods and doomed mortals let you flick the pages at a frantic pace to learn what happens next. The book itself was in a desirable state. Not like new but like it had been well cared for in it's aged past.

Not a book, but a short article.

It took me less than 10 minutes to read this "book" from beginning to the end. The content of this "book", at very best, can pass as a short blog post.

While I agree with all the 7 ways the author lists, there is no elaboration, no full-length samples or even examples, and nothing concrete. The underlined word in the title, "immediately", is quite misleading.

At the end of this short article, the author encourages you to take his online course with 50% off its list price. Whether or not you take his class, it is quite clear that this "book" alone is woefully inadequate for increasing your wiring score, or your writing in general.

Characters and Sailing Boats

Voices is a great book to pick up and read one story at a time, giving yourself time to absorb the meaning of the story and the reasons behind writing it. I also recommend this volume highly to anyone who sails. I am not a sailor, but I vicariously lived like one in some of Gerald's best stories set on sailboats. It seems like being on a sailing holiday is a good time for character study. And Gerald also has a formidable way with words.

Honesty, truth and courage under pin each of them and, while seldom dramatic, the lesson is clear. This is especially evident in "VOICES" which is a true masterpiece.

Delightful stories of a variety of women finding happiness as they come into their own lives: a peacock image from the desert, powerful dreams of water, a Mexico so vivid you can smell it. My favorite story: how a Peace Corp volunteer walked through crocodiles to a concert in Ghana to land in a rock star's bed. Insightful descriptions of women's innergeographies. "Hidden", a lively and utterly cheerful book, is very good company: I read it straight through.

About the Author
Hector Hugh Munro (18 December 1870 – 13 November 1916), better known by the pen name Saki, and also frequently as H. H. Munro, was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirised Edwardian society and culture. He is considered a master of the short story and often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, and Kipling, he himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward, and P. G. Wodehouse.

Saki at his best

Beasts and Super-Beasts comprises thirty-seven short stories from the pen of the incomparable Saki, which was the pen-name for H. H. Munro. Saki's ironic and witty stories chronicled the British upper class during the Edwardian period, the era that represented the zenith of British power and complacency just before the cataclysm of World War I. The quality of his wit and satiric humor are of the very highest order, comparable to very best of Oscar Wilde and Ambrose Bierce. As with Bierce, a touch of cruelty was often present in Saki's humor. In addition, Saki also shared with Bierce a taste for the supernatural, a quality which comes across in many of the stories in this particular collection.

Reading Saki is an absolute must for any aspiring writer, and an absolute pleasure for readers everywhere.

Some of Saki's best stories

I'm a big fan of Saki's incredibly dry wit and hilariously snarky upper-class idiots - the characters he describes may be firmly set in their particular British early-20th-century setting, but many of them are universal types who can be found in practically any time and place. This collection has some of my favorites (especially the second story "Laura" and "The Schartz-Metterklume Method").

The lack of a table of contents is annoying but not terrible, and for a free copy of the text it's readable and enjoyable.

Read a review in the Wall St Journal. Wanted to read a few of these gems, some of which I had read many years ago. I do like the short story format, and Saki is one of its masters. I like O. Henry, Ambrose Bierce, Oscar Wilde, Poe and Shirley Jackson. Got this one free for the Kindle, so I can browse and consume at my leisure.

Short, entertaining read.

To be completely honest I was confused while reading this, but at the end of this short read, I couldn't help but grin. The confusion helped in the end when all was revealed. Still, there was, I believe maybe one misspelled word, and that's a major pet peeve of mine. I love reads that tackle the darker corners of humanity, and I almost couldn't give it a perfect five because of the misleading, but that ending got me. Had to give in!

I loved Stella by Starlight

I loved Stella by Starlight, so was looking forward to reading De Valera’s latest short story, and I wasn’t disappointed, this is another awesome read. A powerful, very poignant, superbly written journey. The characters draw you in to their fascinating and sometimes frightening world. Without giving too much away, The Last Train to Parthenia, (part of the Busting God series) gives Bob Johnson something he’s craved his whole adult life. The perfect ending.
