About the Author
Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron of Dunsany (24 July 1878 – 25 October 1957) was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist, notable for his work, mostly in fantasy, published under the name Lord Dunsany. More than eighty books of his work were published, and his oeuvre includes many hundreds of published short stories, as well as successful plays, novels and essays. Born to one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, Dunsany lived much of his life at perhaps Ireland's longest-inhabited home, Dunsany Castle near Tara, worked with W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, received an honourary doctorate from Trinity College, was chess and pistol-shooting champion of Ireland, and travelled and hunted extensively. He died in Dublin after an attack of appendicitis.

For all practical purposes, this is only half of the book

This is the fifth collection of ironic yet gorgeous tales to be published by Lord Dunsany. Like its four predecessors, it was accompanied by equally splendid illustrations by Sidney Sime. Sime's illustrations add to each of the books in which they appear. In this book, however, where the illustrations came first and inspired most of the fourteen stories, their omission is more than a mere inconvenience. The tales remain enjoyable - as the products of early Dunsany, how could they not be? - but this edition deprives the reader of participation in the playful interaction between prose and image intended by its creators.

Beautiful fantasy

It can only be guessed at why this book was out of print in the US until recently. In it, the reader can discover a charming collection of VERY short stories, which flit from whimsical to mythological, humorous to chilling. All are written in Dunsany's incomparable prose, which ranges from arch first-person narrative to stuff that sounds like embellished mythology.
In this you'll find centaurs, sphinxes, master thieves, about-to-retire pirate chiefs, kings trying to move an emotionless queen to tears, a magical window, a pair of feuding idols, and a delightful story called "Miss Cubbidge and the Dragon of Romance." In addition, this new reprint by Wildside Press has a beautiful cover of a young boy on a winged horse.
The stories are a little short -- much shorter than most present-day short fantasy stories -- but they are just amazing. A must-read for immediate suspension of belief.

Three tales of famous thieves are part of this collection. _The Book of Wonder_ consists of 14 of Dunsany's short stories (I've sorted them by title rather than order of appearance); it's in print as I write this, as part of the Fantasy Masterworks edition of _Time and the Gods_.
"The Bride of the Man-Horse" - Shepperalk the centaur headed from the first for the city of Zretazoola, though all the mundane plain lay between.
"Chu-bu and Sheemish" - The idol Chu-bu was worshipped alone in his temple for over a hundred years, until the day the priests brought in the upstart idol Sheemish to be worshipped beside him.
"The Coronation of Mr. Thomas Shap" - When Mr. Shap perceived the beastliness of his occupation as a salesman, he began to venture into the lands of dream and wonder as an escape.
"Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller" - Thangobrind, a master thief operating behind a cover as a jeweller, is offered the soul of a Merchant Prince's daughter in exchange for stealing a diamond from the temple of Hlo-Hlo...
"The Hoard of the Gibbelins" - The Gibbelins maintain their hoard only to attract a continual supply of food...humans...
"The House of the Sphinx" - A visitor chances to come to the House of the Sphinx after a mighty deed has been done, and her servants are in a panic...
"How Nuth Would Have Practiced His Art Upon the Gnoles" - Nuth the incomparable is a master thief. "It may be urged against my use of the word incomparable that in the burglary business the name of Slith stands paramount and alone; and of this I am not ignorant; but Slith is a classic, and lived long ago, and knew nothing at all of modern competition..."
"How One Came, as Was Foretold, to the City of Never" - "Time had been there, but not to work destruction...by I know not what bribe averted." But not even that Ultimate City is perfect.
"The Injudicious Prayers of Pombo the Idolater" - It is unwise to pray to one idol, only to become impatient and ask another idol to curse the first one; it's against their etiquette....
"The Loot of Bombasharna" - The seas are becoming too hot to hold Captain Shard and the crew of the pirate ship _Desperate Lark_. The sacking of Bombasharna is to be their last hurrah before retirement...
"Miss Cubbidge and the Dragon of Romance" - If princesses are in short supply, sometimes a dragon might have to kidnap the daughter of a member of Parliament.

Great flash card system for Praxis!

I was very pleased with the Health and Physical Education flash card system. It helped to give me an idea of what exactly would be on the Praxis which made me feel much more comfortable going into the test. While taking the test I recognized just about every questions from the flash cards. There are ALOT of flash cards to go through, but if you take the time and organize them you will fine it very helpful!

At the end of that avenue was a colossal chariot with three bronze horses driven by the winged figure of Fame, and behind her in the chariot the huge form of Welleran, Merimna's ancient hero, standing with extended sword. So urgent was the mien and attitude of Fame, and so swift the pose of the horses, that you had sworn that the chariot was instantly upon you, and that its dust already veiled the faces of the Kings. And in the city was a mighty hall wherein were stored the trophies of Merimna's heroes. Sculptured it was and domed, the glory of the art of masons a long while dead, and on the summit of the dome the image of Rollory sat gazing across the Cyresian mountains towards the wide lands beyond, the lands that knew his sword. And beside Rollory, like an old nurse, the figure of Victory sat, hammering into a golden wreath of laurels for his head the crowns of fallen Kings.

About the Author

Edward J. M. D. Plunkett, the 18th Baron of Dunsany, was one of the foremost fantasy writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Lord Dunsany, and particularly his Book of Wonder, is widely recognized as a major influence on many of the best known fantasy writers, including J.R.R. Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft, and C.S. Lewis. Holding one of the oldest titles in the Irish peerage, Lord Dunsany lived much of his life at Dunsany Castle, one of Ireland s longest-inhabited homes. He died in 1957, leaving an indelible mark on modern fantasy writing.

Wielding the "Sword"

It's been almost a century since the "Sword of Welleran" collection was first published, compiling the title novella with other stories by early fantasy writer Lord Dunsany. Now finally this collection is back in print, and new readers can get acquainted with Dunsany's elaborate prose and otherworldly plotlines.

The title novella is a robust story written in a delicate style -- it takes place in the city of Merimna, "a marvel of spires and figures of bronze, and marble fountains, and trophies of fabulous wars, and broad streets given over wholly to the Beautiful." It's a city that proudly remembers its mysterious heroes and past victories.

When the hero Welleran is killed, nobody can quite believe it. But he is dead, and when the dead hero finds that he is "but dreams," he decides to haunt a young sleeping leader named Rold, in the hopes that young Rold will take his (Welleran's) sword and attack their enemies.

In the other stories, Dunsany spins stories about the exotic city of Babbulkund, and how it was destroyed, about the exquisite dancing "Kith of the Elf Folk," about the death of Tom the highwayman and the three men who are having some fun with graves, the Book of Magicians, natural disasters having a chitchat, a hero pursuing a monster, and some of the most frightening ghosts imaginable.

Dunsany was one of the few fantasy authors who wrote before Tolkien, and his stories are still striking in their originality and beauty. Most fantasy writers just churn out bad quest novels of at least six hundred pages. Not so with Dunsany, whose stories are as exquisite as they are short, and whose stories about elves and brave heroes never seem cliched.

Except for the odd mention of pharoahs and archbishops, these stories could almost take place in another universe. Dunsany spins up elaborate pictures of cities that never existed and fairy creatures, without seeming trite. Instead, it feels like a book of lost legends, deities, history and myths that has just been dug up again.

His writing is almost as lovely as his world-building. At times it can be a bit formal, but not to the point where it seems rigid or bloodless ("Evening stole up out of mysterious lands and came down on the streets of Paris..."). He lavishes loving detail and quiet grace, even on the grotesque "sins" sitting in the laps of ghosts. Even the cutesy "Hurricane" is beautifully written, and has a poignant depth.

Lord Dunsany's "Sword of Welleran and Other Tales" is one of his most entrancing books, without a single dud story in the entire collection. An exquisite read.

Not just fantasy

Lord Dunsany's writings are not just about fantasy but contain a deep insightful reading of the nature of mankind. Many (if not most) of his writings contain a message that is as pertinent today as when it was written. He is able to convey that insight wrapped in a language and prose of imagination, beauty and darkness all rolled into one. Everyone should read what the spider has to say about the beauty of mankind.

Dunsany Could Have Authored the Stories They Told in Rivendell

Everyone always starts articles and reviews about Lord Dunsany by observing that he was probably the finest British fantasy writer before Tolkien emerged. I have no quibble with that position. But a bit more needs to be added.

"Lord of the Rings" is, of course, the ultimate quest adventure, full of action and movement. People drink beer, perform noble deeds, sharpen their swords, rally for battle, and do heroic things in a vast and dangerous world. But in their quiet and contemplative moments they recount and reflect upon tales from earlier times, involving the ancient nobility of legendary heroes from barely remembered lands. Dunsany's tales feel more like those tales.

It is entirely fitting that, considering his time and circumstances, Dunsany's stories are a bit more formal, a bit sadder, a bit slower, a bit "older" feeling than "The Lord of the Rings", (and pretty much anything written since). His stories are more delicate, more ethereal, and feel more like marvels and wonders than they do histories. Most of the tales have dreamlike elements, although descriptions can sometimes be as sharp as glass. The best stories feel like they were remembered rather just than written. They can be gentle or feverish; they can be pointed or vague. There is poetry in the prose and strong visual elements.

These are not whimsical tales or fairy stories. This is not Victorian claptrap. These are tales filled with hard lessons and bright truths. They may be dreamlike, but these dream castles are made of stone. For all of their delicacy, these stories are written with crisp authority.

As I read these I kept returning to a different book, Jan Morris's Last Letters from Hav. Morris is one of Britain's most honored travel writers, and "Last Letters From Hav" is her brilliant book about Hav, an imaginary city-state that she created so convincingly that holiday makers clamored for flights and tours to the place. Hav feels exactly like the modern city that might have survived and grown on the ruins of one of Dunsany's cities. In a more modern form it has the same ethereal and insubstantial and romantic reality and solidity of Babbulkund or Merimna. So, for what it's worth as a genial suggestion, after this Dunsany volume you might want to bookend your reading experience with Hav.

Pam Bonsper has always loved to write and has free-lanced for many years. She has published children's stories and poems in The Bee Hive, Mexican World, Happy Times, Classmate and Bumples.com. She is a feature writer for Coastal Canine magazine. She has recently published three children's picture books, The Big Brass Band, Missing Nora, and The Problem of the Hot World. The Piano Tuner and other Short Stories is her first collection of short stories. Her books are inspired by her grandchildren who she helps care for at her home in California and by her previous travels and experiences.

Well written great stories

A great collection of seven very well written unique and intriguing short stories that convey aspects of life and human nature. The characters in all the stories are depicted very well and come across as very believable. I felt drawn into and involved in each story and each one has a satisfying end. Apart from being enjoyable stories for short story fans, I thought each one also contained perceptive observations of people and life. Overall I think my favourite is ‘Stale Cakes and Car Keys’ – I loved the ending where Ted and his elderly mother both come to a new understanding of each other and their own quiet conclusions about what matters most.

A really wonderful collection - each of these stories offers the reader a sweet escape. Each of these incredibly different stories shares the authors very hopeful and positive outlook. A perfect collection for an afternoon of reading - I enjoyed this book very much and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys short stories. Great book from the Piano Tuner to Dimples the Duck. The book is full of warm stories that tug at your heartstrings. If you like short stories that keep you wondering and then provide a twist at the end, you'll enjoy this read from Pam Bonsper.
