About the Author
Author, poet, and literary critic, Edgar Allan Poe is credited with pioneering the short story genre, inventing detective fiction, and contributing to the development of science fiction. Interesting look into 19th century Spiritualism

In this 1844 essay, American author Edgar Allen Poe (1809-49) uses a story to explain the then current thinking among certain thinkers, particularly Spiritualists. In the story, the narrator recounts having mesmerized (hypnotized) a dying man, asking him questions about the ultimate nature of reality. The dying man explains about ether, spirit, mind and matter, and God.

Overall, I found this to be an interesting read. In his fascinating book, A Briefer History of Time, Stephen Hawking explains the concept of ether, why it was embraced by some scientist and why it was ultimately rejected. At the time of this book, though, Spiritualism and the ether were on the cutting edge of thinking. So, if you are interested in 19th century Spiritualism, then this is a good book to read.

Poe's tale of a doctor dialoging with a hypnotized patient.

The 19th century witnessed an explosion of imagination. After centuries dominated by church religion and the 18th century’s age of reason, men and women began exploring new ways of looking at and experiencing the world, including the world of the unseen. Esoteric psychic practices such as séances, channeling and hypnosis were used to directly contact realms beyond the material. Incidentally, nowadays we say hypnosis but mesmerism was the term used back then, coming from the Austrian physician, Franz Anton Mesmer, who employed this technique in his treatment of patients. Is it any wonder Edgar Allan Poe, master of the fantastic, wrote this tale about a doctor dialoging with his hypnotized patient?

Reading ‘Mesmeric Revelation’, what strikes me is how Mr. Vankirk, the man under hypnosis, speaks of God and the afterlife not in biblical or religious terms, but in the scientific language of his time; and using this scientific language, his experience parallels an entire range of other philosophical and spiritual traditions. To provide examples, below are several passages from the story coupled with my comments:

The doctor (P.) asks the patient (V.) questions.
“P. What then is God ?
V. [Hesitating for many minutes.] I cannot tell.
P. Is not God spirit ?
V. While I was awake I knew what you meant by "spirit," but now it seems only a word — such for instance as truth, beauty — a quality, I mean.”
P. Is not God immaterial ?
V. There is no immateriality — it is a mere word. That which is not matter, is not at all — unless qualities are things.”
The patient’s inability to use language to speak of God and communicate his experience reminds us of mystics such as Meister Eckhart telling us when we experience God directly all of our language and concepts fall away.

Answering further questions, the patient shifts his explanation. Toward the end of his detailed account, we read:
“P. You assert, then, that the unparticled matter, in motion, is thought?
V. In general, this motion is the universal thought of the universal mind. This thought creates. All created things are but the thoughts of God.
P. You say, "in general."
V. Yes. The universal mind is God. For new individualities, matter is necessary.
P. But you now speak of "mind" and "matter" as do the metaphysicians.”
The doctor/narrator is spot-on in citing how his patient is describing the world of the philosophers – recall how the Pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Anaxagoras said ultimate reality is ‘Mind’ (Nous) and how the Neo-Platonic philosopher Plotinus held ‘The One’ being the absolute simple first principle of all.

The patient’s explanation shifts again as he experiences a different phase in his altered state of consciousness:
“There are two bodies — the rudimental and the complete ; corresponding with the two conditions of the worm and the butterfly. What we call "death," is but the painful metamorphosis. Our present incarnation is progressive, preparatory, temporary. Our future is perfected, ultimate, immortal. The ultimate life is the full design.” This section of the tale is quite remarkable. We hear echoes of the Bardo teachings from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Rather than continuing with quotes, suffice to say the patient takes more shifts as he continues to answer the doctor’s questions. One might ask if there is any mention at all from the Western monotheistic tradition. Actually, the answer is ‘yes’. At the very end of the tale, the doctor makes an observation and alludes to “Azrael’s hand”, Azrael being the "Angel of Death" from Muslim and Jewish legend.

A Boring Tale of Hypnotism.

If you want to be bored, go ahead and read Mesmeric Revelation, a story of a man on his deathbed, who is hypnotized and talks about nature, God, and the universe. It might sound interesting to you, but the language is quite thick and probably comprehensible to those who are familiar with physics and philosophy all rolled in one. For me, it's mostly "who cares?" All in all, skip this one.

A Dark And Magical Modern Fairy-Tale

Every now and then, one comes across an unexpected jewel of a short story but few glisten so brightly as Seraphina. Author Ekaterina Botziou transports us to a dark fairy-tale like world which rather reminds me of some dark Tim Burton fantasy but it is much more than that. Seraphina is a magical story told in rhyming verse that will leave you both enthralled in the rags to riches tale of Seraphina but also marvelling at the clever word play of the author.

Forget the usual boring novels of romance or murder and try something entirely different where baddies are bad, deeds are daring and the fate of the kingdom rests in the hand of one young ballsy heroine.

Seraphina will stay with you long after you read it whilst also somehow transporting you back to your childhood and says a lot more in a short story format than many other longer reads.

It's a new direction for Ekaterina but one which she can be proud of. A highly recommended read!

Gripping high adventure with beautiful, profound depth

'Seraphina' is one of the most extraordinary and memorable works of fiction I have read in a very long time. Full praise should go to Ekaterina Botziou not only for her bravery in choosing to write a short story in verse (which so few writers would do), but for her success in writing a story that is not only gripping in its drama but also beautifully realised. 'Seraphina' is first and foremost an adventure, a good old-fashioned yarn of good versus evil. But it is also a work of art that is profound and thought-provoking. In particular, the 'interludes' that are spaced throughout the story and give the reader a chance to reflect on some of the themes of the narrative are, I think, quite remarkable - highly intelligent, lyrically beautiful explorations of life, death and humanity. This is well worth a read for any one who loves a good tale, wonderfully told.

Firstly I must be honest and confess that poetry is not my favourite form of literature, however, having said that, after reading this piece of work I have been converted! What an astounding read! It pulled me in and had me engrossed from the very beginning to the very end. Without spoiling the story for other readers, the heroine, Seraphina, described as a ‘RAVEN LIONESS’ is somebody you would want as an ally not an enemy. This condensed epic adventure is highly recommended. Well done.

Pulpy, action-packed weirdness...

Normally when reading an author for the first time I try to start with his or her first book. But I’m sick of being 17 years behind everything most of the time. So in reading David Barbee for the first time, I decided to start with his latest, The Night's Neon Fangs.

Pulpy, action-packed weirdness abounds in this entertaining collection of four novellas. Barbee does a fine job at creating sympathetic protagonists who find themselves in difficult fixes if not full-on damnation. In many ways, these characters and their dilemmas are conventional fare. But the devil is in the details (or the Batdevil, I should say, though I’m getting a little ahead of myself.) For example, the novella “BATCOP OUTTA HELL” tells the story of a cop who must avenge his murdered family. In its distilled essence, such a story sounds familiar and archetypal enough, clichéd even. But this avenging cop is not your garden variety avenging cop. Nay, he’s a batcop hailing from a batcity in a batuniverse, and he gets murdered and brought back to life as a batdemon after making a deal with the Batdevil in Hell. Similarly, the titular novella “THE NIGHT'S NEON FANGS” features an unwilling werewolf who seeks to free himself of his curse. But this unwilling werewolf is no ordinary werewolf: He’s an electric werewolf. And not only is he an electric werewolf, but he lives in a world where mummies rain down from the skies, consequently a world where big money is made in the “mummysweeping” business.

Barbee’s well-wrought prose is lean but descriptive where it needs to be. He grabs the right words without ever being wordy. The dialogue in his stories is crisp and natural. He utilizes backstory effectively, giving the reader just the right amount without info dumping. Taken together, these four novellas sit comfortably next to one another, collectively offering readers an experience that includes elements of horror, crime fiction, sci-fi, humor, and the western genres, all bathed in the bizarre.

Great stuff. I look forward to reading more from Barbee.

This book was everything i love about Bizzaro

This book was everything i love about Bizzaro. I enjoyed all four stories but my favorites were the one about drunken Noah and the robot outlaw epic. Highly entertaining stuff! If that's what you want is to simply be entertained by a creative form of fantasy writing then read this book. I will definitely check out more Barbee.

Four bizarro novellas in one book!

David Barbee has done it again! His newest offering, Nights Neon Fangs, contains four novellas cram-packed full of great characters, settings, and adventures. I knew David was a very talented writer from his previous work, but NNF's just proves he's getting better and better.
The book kicks off with the title story, Nights Neon Fangs. This is the story of Buster Wade, who on Christmas night was bitten by an electric werewolf. Yes, an electric werewolf, tell me that's not the coolest thing ever. Barbee could have just gone from there and wrote a standard werewolf story, and I'm sure it would have been great. But, he takes it further by creating a whole new world, where an ancient Pharaoh has cursed the world to endure a massive storm cloud that rains down mummies, where vampire cows are raised to help maintain America's blood supply, and there's a popular musician that is animated red jell-o named Jellostein.
Next we have Noah's Arkopolis. Here we have a re-imagining of the events from the bible where Noah was told to build an ark and gather up two of every creature as the world flooded. Only, in Barbee's story, Noah's ark never saw land, and the world stayed completely under water. Over time the ark was converted into Arkopolis, and all the animals and people breed together creating new species. This was my second favorite story of the four, as it showcases Barbee’s great sense of humor along with his wild imagination.
The story that Ultimo Sumbitch is a futuristic western, where reptilian aliens have invaded and forced the humans out of the cities. That Ultimo Sumbitch himself is a merciless killer, with six shooters for hands, who wanders around killing for money.
The last story, Bat Cop out of Hell is another unique take on a familiar premise. A revenge story that follows a batcop who is brought back from the dead by the batdevil to avenge his murdered family. It's an entire bat world, filled with many different bat characters, where our resurrected batcop tries to solve the mystery of what happened to him and his batfamily.
The thing I like the most about this collection is each story takes place in a new and interesting world. Barbee is great at creating these unique settings and filling them with crazy characters and exciting plots. Barbee seems to have no shortage of wild and crazy ideas, and I for one am excited by that. He has become one of my favorite writers in the bizarro genre.

Simply odd

This is a strange little story. A married couple is having a baby. The only problem? The unborn child has some weird development issues and controls his mothers every move. This may have appealed to me more if things were described better and I was a parent. A quick read worth a solid 3 stars. It also has a few transcribing errors. The first letter of each section(seperated by lines) is missing for some strange reason. Just a heads up.

I read this because of the Twilight Zone episode based on this author's story "To Serve Man." This was a very strange book! I did not care for the abruptness of the ending and felt like I was left hanging. However, I was also relieved by the way the story ended. A very weird book!

Cuteness overload! This is an adorably cute short story about a cat named Bugaria, who only wants to get his loving owner a Christmas gift. Along the way to fulfilling his mission he gets into some kitty mischief!

I am actually planning on reading this to my kids to see if they like it. If this story had illustration it would be a great children's book. I can see this as a little series, reading about Bugaria and his little adventures, and all the kitty mischief he gets in along the way.
