About the Author
In the 1990s, the author had twenty-one articles published, both nationally and internationally. After gaining an honours degree in Geosciences, doing post-graduate study in Occupational Health and Fitness, and earning a masters degree in Science Communication, he developed an interest for simple communication. A passion for writing again emerged, and combining various interests in fine art, museum exhibition display, biology, geology, poetry, and the mystical led to the story of Peter: A Darkened Fairytale. The author still retains a childlike vision of the world, which is conveyed throughout his books.

Peter's Goblins - Short Poems and Tiny Thoughts is a fantastical collection of short poems based upon the surreal, magical story Peter: A Darkened Fairytale.

Peter fans, myself included, will often reread this great little set, a fit complement to compliment to the Peter series. Mischievous gobliins stalk hidden places, bearing goblin magic, stealing wands, and harassing fairies. If you see a little fellow holding a skull lanterns, you'd better run and hide!

Peter's Goblins is a set of three volumes. But a fairy whispered in my ears that more volumes may soon be coming.

Peter Goblin Feast

William Obrien has won over hearts once again with another inspirational tale from his Peter Darkened Fairytale Series spinoff.
In this witty and entertaining book we find our Goblin friends feasting, romping, having Goblin fun and practically up to no good as usual.

I love how William keeps coming up with all these interesting tale surrounding his Goblins and they never get old, never get tired, always fun, always entertaining and I am excited about what he comes up with next.

Ever since reading Peter: Goblin Way, I have been flipping through another one from the same collection (this book here). I didn't read it all in one go, but I read a little each day, when my mind needs a break from novel-type reads. These books make for such a charming escape. I do need to get around to reading the actual novels in this series, by for not, I'm enjoyed the poetry that those novels have inspired. In fact, it makes me feel inspired, too. If you like dark and quirky fairytales, or poetry, or want to see what it would be like if the two came together, these books of short poems are for you.

An interesting story from a master

This story is mentioned in the author's wonderful reference book, "Techniques of the Selling Writer." He uses it as an example. If you want to learn how to write well, you should definitely read both of these books by Dwight V. Swain.

These 25 pages are only the beginning of a story. No way near complete!

Beware! This is not a complete story! It's only 25 pages, which is shown at forehand but nowhere does say that it isn't a complete story. I thought it might be short, but it's not even half way near a story, only the beginning of one. A total rip-off, even for the small price, and I returned it.
Also, this must have been from Swain's earlier years. It was really not that well-written. He has much better books.

An entertaining read from Leonard Lockhard

Leonard Lockhard was the pen name of one or both of Charles Harness and Theodore L. Thomas. Harness and Thomas were each respected science fiction authors in the 1950s and also were licensed patent attorneys. Each of the "Leonard Lockhard" stories presents an amusing angle on U.S. Patent law. While best appreciated by those in the field, the stories would be entertaining to anyone who enjoys clever fiction.

Charles Harness was a patent lawyer and a well-regarded Science Fiction author. This story, however, has very little S-F in it, and a lot about patent law. A young patent lawyer is tasked with applying for a patent on a revolutionary new type of paper that can't be torn; minor complications ensue. The invention might have revolutionized the paper industry had it been real (and had the complications not ensued), but it is still not the type of invention to make for scintillating science fiction. Untearable paper is just not that exciting; sorry!

The True Story of Ah Q, and Other Stories

Selected Stories of Lu Hsun is a collection of English translations of major stories of the Chinese author Lu Xun translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang and first published in 1960 by the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing. This book was republished in 2007 by the Foreign Languages Press with the updated title of Lu Xun Selected Works. Stories included in the collection are drawn from three of Lu Xun's story collections: Call to Arms (CTA), "Wandering" (W), and "Old Tales Retold" (OTR).

The stories were a major influence on the May Fourth Movement in China in the 1920s.

One major theme in the stories in this collection is that habits of mind (psychology or "spirit") need to be examined; improvements in material conditions and institutions, while important, are not sufficient by themselves to renew China. See in particular A Madman's Diary and The True Story of Ah Q.

Lu Xun employed point of view in his stories in a way that was novel at the time for Chinese literature, helping readers consider new possibilities about the true nature of the reality around them.

A second major theme in the stories is the problem of how members of the intellectual class are to live their lives. It is a theme in many stories, including Kong Yiji, My Old Home, In the Wine Shop, Regret for the Past, and others.

A third major theme in the stories is commentary on traditional customs and institutions. The stories look at the specific dysfunctions of particular customs and institutions, and also at the general result in which people are discarded. It is a theme in many stories, especially Kong Yiji and The New Year Sacrifice.

Only for those with knowledge of modern Chinese history

While the stories themselves are worth reading for anyone with an interest in Chinese history, they won't make much sense to anyone with no knowledge of modern Chinese history as the stories all have to be interpreted against the social and political backdrop of the Xinhai Revolution and its aftermath.

For this reason, I feel the book should have included an introduction to both Lu Xun and the socio-political circumstances that influenced his writing. Specific analyses for each separate story would also have contributed greatly to making this an excellent book. As it is, the book is merely a collection of stories with almost no information/analyses to put these stories into context.

Further, the text is littered with typos. Most frequently, the letters "b" and "h" as well as "r" and "t" get mixed up, leading to instances where the text states "cur off his head" instead of "cut off" and "heating" instead of "beating". I personally found this quite annoying and also unacceptable considering the frequency of these typos.

In closing, this edition will only please those who know against which backdrop to interpret the stories. And even for these people, I think there must be a better collection of Lu Xun's stories available that offers more commentary and analysis. Only get this if you will be satisfied with just the stories and nothing more!

Common Core Practice – Grade 6 English Language Arts

The 6th grade ELA Common Core Practice book from Lumos Learning gives students practice on every standard and substandard of 6th grade English/Language Arts. It is divided into three categories: literature, informational text, and language, moving sequentially through each standard. Each of the three categories has an answer section at the end of it with both answers and detailed explanations included.
Several reading passages are repeated throughout the book, each time asking different questions focusing on the specific standard being studied. The student, therefore, is able to familiarize himself with the passage, analyzing it from several perspectives.
Topics of the passages are varied, including poetry, history, science, health, fiction, and everyday life situations. The present version has a few errors in word use including using “weary” for “wary” in standard L. 6.3.B., and “then” for “than” in the detailed explanation section for RI.6.2. A few other minor errors are present, but the overall book has good and useful content. It provides important practice on the skills 6th grade students need to learn. I believe this book is a good resource for practicing skills that will prepare students for new standardized testing.
