James Schardt is a 21 year veteran of the US Army as an AH-64 Armament Systems Repairer. He is currently a college student at Austin Peay State University. He enjoys shooting muzzleloaders, painting toy soldiers, and miniatures wargaming. He lives with his wife, two teenage daughters, and far too many cats in Middle Tennessee.

Short, entertaining fantasy story

First of all, I'm incredibly disappointed that I couldn't find more stories by this author. I'm hoping he'll release more soon!
I'll admit that my expectations for this book were low. I stumbled across it when looking for good fantasy short stories and figured I'd go ahead and pick it up. The grammar isn't perfect and some of the descriptions are shaky, but the story. The story. *happy sigh*
The story in this book is fantastic. It's about retired heroes failing at life beyond their heroics.
The narrator is a lawyer. At times this almost makes it read like a legal fantasy thriller, which is hilarious. The narrator is really more of a background character to the real story though. The most intense moment is when the hero tells us the story of how he really saved the kingdom. That part was incredibly well done and is the reason I want more stories by this author.
I'd recommend this as a quick read to anyone with a kindle unlimited subscription, and I'll be recommending it to my gaming group as a cool fantasy character study.

A great short story with two, no, wait THREE good parts! Maybe even four, but I'm a fast reader.

I picked this up as a result of the 2nd Annual Labor Day Weekend Book Promotion held by Hoyt's Huns. It's a good pick!
The snooty lawyer gets stuck in the stinky town with crummy beer. Oh, the humanity.
He's so snooty, he doesn't even flirt with the very attractive barmaid; in fact, he isn't even nice to her when she makes a well-intentioned recommendation that the brandy is better than the beer.
His interest picks up when a tradesmen walks in and shoots three obnoxious drunks.
Okay, here's the first of the two best parts of the short story: ummm....wait. There are three good parts. The first good part is that the hero is a snooty lawyer.
The second good part is that with an incredible economy of words, the author gives us an entire back-story. It's really, really well done.
The third part is a surprise, but you won't get it until you read the story, which I encourage you to do posthaste.

Aging heroes meet law, justice, and mercy

This short story was a highly enjoyable read. It is set in a small kingdom, and answers the question of what happens to heroes when their kingdom doesn't want them anymore. The main character is a lawyer who is concerned with justice and mercy. He sees a murder take place right in front of him... I won't tell you more--
This story grabbed my attention and surprised me at the end. It is a fantasy with legal thriller elements. To the author-- Please write more in this world.
