These are stories told by those who discover photographs of their family, some from an album, but all that have been long forgotten. As we listen to their tales, we might remember Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s remark that what matters isn’t what happens to us but what we remember and how we remember it.
“Photographs were so deceptive though, she thought. They weren’t evidence of the truth as so many thought they were. What she was likely to find valuable or significant, in any of the pictures in her albums (and the archival boxes), or even what was actually noticed, would likely be at odds with what others would see in them, even the people who were in the pictures. The last time Vernon had sat with her and looked at these, he had told utterly different stories about them than she had, often about the same picture they were looking at. It wasn’t just that memory might have been shaky for either one of them; it had to do with what each picture held for them, individually, the content of it, which seemed to her to be shaped by what they were searching for, expecting, hoping to find.”

Portrait of Jesse
What did Jesse Jantz want? The answer to this question was batted around in family circles as long as the man lived. At times, his desires and ambitions seemed like those of any other—a man trying to get ahead, make a name for himself, establish foundational values upon which he and those he belonged to could rely. At other times, he seemed cut loose from normal society, a person becoming unhinged and broken beyond repair. And then he met up with the love of his life and everything changed for the worst. He grew into somebody that he barely recognized, let alone his family. He became a shapeshifter who introduces us to the potential of our own dark side Here’s a tale about a transformation through a lifetime that seems to come at us full-blown, with no birthing, little backstory, just a knocking on a door that we open to sinister surprise.
Picture of Darlene with Vernon and Willard
Darlene Jantz had no model to help her define self-identity or family. The belonging given to her at birth was burdened with religious demands and loyalty to a family that couldn’t be trusted. She longed for love and for both excitement and stability in the creation of a family of her own. But the man she had chosen for her husband was finding it hard to let go of his biological family and establish a new life with her. Ultimately, Darlene does create the family she’s envisioned, but pays a price for it higher than most of us would ever want or have to give.
Snapshots of Timothy
Timothy Jantz wants to come back home but only after he’s spent much of his life attempting to be free of it. He’s a nester, but also a hero, like Jason and his Argonauts, searching through a sea of troubles that he drifts into without a clue but which leads him toward his destiny. From day one, he’s his own person but his fate will not allow him to rest on himself. He’s a hero with more threshold guardians than anyone can possibly manage in a lifetime. He too needs a family but he finds it very differently than most, certainly different than the other members of his family. Through his adventures, he learns that the closer to his mortality that he comes, the more life, and love, he is given.
Three Pictures of Teddy
Teddy Jantz was a child prodigy. He was born with an astonishing memory and a remarkable singing voice. From the time he was very young, he assumed that if he followed what his elders taught him and required of him, he would arrive at his own fulfillment. But Teddy was, after his youth betrayed him, thrown to the wind and carried into a life search for security and self-satisfaction that eluded him until his dying day. He leaves behind a legacy of questions, answers and humanity that in the end is not overlooked.

Four haunting, beautiful character studies
By Gordon P. Bonnet
"Back Then" by Cly Boehs is a gripping, beautiful book, made up of four interlocked stories about members of a family in Oklahoma. By turns funny, sad, disturbing, and poignant, these stories are about the sometimes dysfunctional interactions that drive family dynamics. The characters are real, and their struggles, successes, and failings will resonate with every reader.
I would recommend this book without any reservations. Its stories will haunt you for a long time after you finish the last page. Do yourself a favor, and read this!
