Deeply Absorbing

In “A Teacher of the Holocaust,” Milton Teichman compassionately observes what
people do without passing judgment on it.
When, for example, in the first story, an expert in Holocaust literature finds that there
are limits to how much he can care for a Holocaust survivor, and their romantic
relationship explodes in a scene of shattering pain, Teichman contrives to draw them
both sympathetically. The tearful woman is furious, and the good Professor gets no
sleep that night. As another character says in the last story, “What human being doesn’t
make mistakes?”
I found myself sorry to finish this slim, thoughtful book, and didn’t want it to be over. So
I re-read it, and got even more out of it. Each story is carefully drawn and well worth
reading. But I suppose that if I had to choose my three favorites – a difficult choice
because they are all good -- I’d choose the first one (which gives the collection its
name), and I’d choose "The Request," in which a loving wife feels she has to separate from
her equally loving husband because she wants to adopt twin boys, while he
finds he is too old to have his peace violated with children, and finally I’d choose "The
New Season," with its vivid detailing of what it is to cope with poverty in the depression,
and to find, despite it all, “a strange joy” to be “the recipient of some great good
fortune.”
For those who would appreciate a closely observed, nuanced account of the choices
people make, I unhesitatingly recommend this book.

An interesting collection of stories which lend itself to group discussion, especially those which are open-ended.Varied moral and ethical problems are posed and developed. The author writes with a sensitivity to the dilemmas involved by the protagonists.

is a fine collection of short stories

A Teacher of the Holocaust and other Stories, by Milton Teichman, is a fine collection of short stories. Teichman has beautifully crafted these stories, weaving themes of moral situations and dilemmas throughout this collection. I, especially appreciated the careful reflective and introspective voice of the narrator in each of the stories.
Not only did I thoroughly enjoy reading this book, but I found it instructive. I learned a great deal from Milton Teichman and so will you.
