A Fine Collection
By M. Dowden
This is a very fine anthology, but of course for lots of us we will have read some of these before, as you may follow short stories and their development, or be a fan of one or more of the authors here. Of course that isn’t such a bad thing, as some of these that I read here I have read countless times in the past, but that doesn’t really detract from my enjoyment.
I must admit that I love the way this has been set out in regards to the way the stories have been positioned. Some anthologies use a section scheme where you have stories that cover the same issues together, and such like, whereas this book goes for a simpler, but I would argue more interesting way of listing them. The stories herein are presented to us in chronological order, so we start here with Daniel Defoe’s 1705 piece ‘The Apparition of Mrs Veal’, and work our way through to John Galsworthy’s 1923 piece ‘The Broken Boot’. As you can quite clearly see this anthology covers a very big period, and thus here you can see the change and developments that have been made in short stories. You will obviously not be too surprised at some of the authors that pop up here as you will already know them, and in some cases there are more than one story be them presented here. What hopefully like me will be a treat is reading a story be someone you may never have heard of, or if you have may not have read before, which then gives you the scope to go and find more by these particular authors.
You have here more comedic tales along with more thoughtful and darker ones which really gives you a wide range of reading pleasure. In all I enjoyed all the stories herein and I love the way that this is set out, where normally you only find a chronological order as such when a book concentrates on one particular author. Although I am reviewing this and for that purpose read this back to back, this is really a book to savour and take a dip into, as I will now be doing as I come back to this in the future.
If you love short stories, and the short story form there is really nothing I can see that won’t make you enjoy this book which is a real reading pleasure.

Excellent!
By S. Mahaffey
A fantastic selection of short stories starting with Daniel Defoe's story "The apparition of Mrs. Veal" written in 1705 and ending with John Galsworthy's story "the Broken Boot" written in 1923. It is a great selection of short stories for students and short stories lovers. The stories are written chronologically which shows us how the short story has stayed the same but has evolved at the same time. The authors chosen are a delight to read in this book.
Disclaimer: I received an arc of this book free from the author/publisher from Netgalley. I was not obliged to write a favorable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
