Karen J Mossman comes from a family of journalists with her grand father and uncle having been newspaper editors. Further back a great, great grandfather wrote for his local paper and also published a book based on those articles. Karen is the only one to have gone into the fiction market. We all need Heroes!

These can be tough times, that's for sure. Now more than ever, short stories can provide the medium we all need to touch and enrich our hearts. These fit the bill and then some. Give Karen Mossman credit, she's done a great job of crafting these excellent tales. If you only read novels, it's time you give short stories--these stories!--a try. You won't be sorry.

Especially in this day and age were war seems to be a part of some people's daily lives. It's nice to read something that highlights the positive. People who go out of their way to help others while putting the own life at risk. I'm excited to read more from this brilliant writer.

Short Stories -- Long Remembered

Karen J. Mossman's themed collection of eight short stories investigate a range of heroes in a variety of settings and writing styles.
We begin with "Crossing Serbia," where the hero could be the brave young woman who sets out to provide humanitarian relief in that war-torn country, or the British soldier who rescues her. I would have liked to have been shown, rather than told about, what were, for me, the two most memorable scenes from this story; namely 'I was kneeling in front of him with my hands tied behind my back,' and where one of the group is shot and killed during the long walk to safety.
Other heroes include a rather more unconventional kind in "The Highwayman," and "Shadow Of Doubt." This latter story is intriguing in that it's written in the present tense which is always difficult to accomplish successfully because of the restrictions it imposes on the writer. But the reader loses nothing here as the author pulls it off perfectly, largely by the powerful use of short, staccato sentences.
"Million To One" takes us into the murky world of gangsters and the Mafia, and perhaps we identify more with the main character as being an anti-hero.
An interesting technique is adopted in "Interview With A Charity Founder." Both the plot and characters in this heart-warming story of a football WAG are developed almost entirely with believable and scintillating dialogue rather than descriptive narrative.
One of my favourites in this little gem of a collection, is "Paper Friend" -- a tale of two very different people who've never met and seem to be worlds apart. In one sense this pokes the eye of the declining British prison system with a very sharp stick, showing how hardened criminals are forced to mix with first offenders. One line in particular, is extremely powerful: 'If you weren't a hardened criminal to start off with, you would be by the time you left.' And in another sense this fine tale shows how people's worlds can suddenly be turned entirely upside down, as we reach a somewhat unexpected climax.
I purposely chose not to read these stories in the order they're offered, to get a better feeling for the author's individual styles, and they are certainly varied and accomplished throughout each tale.
Overall, this collection is both entertaining and thought-provoking -- some stories are descriptive, and some told in a very short time span while others are told over a longer period.
The reason I love short story collections is that they always give an intriguing insight into an author's writing styles and motives, and that's certainly the case here. The only reason this gets 4* instead of 5* is my slight disappointment at being told about rather than being shown those two important scenes in "Crossing Serbia." But that's just a minor niggle which doesn't really detract from this book's enjoyment.
