About the Author
Donald E. Westlake (1933-2008) wrote over a hundred novels under his own name and pseudonyms. Many of his books have been made into movies, including The Hunter, which was filmed as Point Blank; the 1999 smash hit Payback; and the 2013 movie Parker. The winner of the three Edgar Awards, he was named a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, the highest honor bestowed by the society, in 1993.

It's Nice to See Short Stories Released as Standalone Reads

This is the second short story by the late Donald E Westlake to be published as a standalone read in recent times. The book only has the 19 page story They Also Serve and nothing else. The other previous published Westlake short story was The Risk Profession. Like that one, They Also Serve is also set in space and like that was originally published in an anthology in 1961. By the way you can get that on Amazon, so depending on current prices that may be better value, find it here, ANALOG - Science Fact and Fiction - Volume 67, number 1 - September Sept 1961. Unlike the Risk Profession, this story hasn't appeared anywhere (that I know of) since then. So for me, someone who has read all of Westlake's novels and recent anthology collections, it was a story by Westlake that I hadn't read before.
The basic plot of this short story, set in 1963 revolves around an alien visiting a colony on the moon where like vultures aliens have been stationed to watch the inhabitants of earth destroy themselves so they can colonise the planet at a later stage once this has happened. He is shocked to learn that all the external buildings are gone and the colony now lives under the surface. These aliens had not envisioned the space race between the Russians and Americans, having just assumed the two sides would nuke each other before advancing to this stage of intelligence.
It's a short story which obviously would have carried more weight a few decades ago when nuclear annihilation was a big fear. It obviously originally was written to stimulate discussion on this sort of topic as well as the implications of the space race but it's still a good worthwhile read today.
The hardcover version has an image of an astronaut on the moon which may put off side some people since the story is set when this hadn't occurred yet. Also bizarrely the hardcopy book's spine doesn't have the title of the book or even Westlake's name on it. Meaning if you were browsing a physical bookstore and it's standing between other books you wouldn't know what it was or notice it. Maybe an indication that online sales are now dominating the book purchasing industry, but still you'd think you'd put some words on there rather than just have a black spine, for people's at home book shelves at the very least.
Still it's great to see short stories published as standalone reads, I hope they continue to do other rare stories by Westlake and other authors in the future.

Half is missing.

I admit, this title is free and almost worth it.
I am not kidding when I say half is missing. I tried downloading it twice to 2 different device types with the same result. After 10 pages, at an essentially random point, "THE END" appears. I will grant a lot to artistic license, but there is no resolution here at all.
In addition, and I may be wrong, but I think I read this story a while ago. If so, the main point of the story, the main cause of distress for the alien commander, was a comparison to vultures. As it stands, there really is no point.
This leaves me with a concern. Since half of this story has gone missing, can I have confidence in other Kindle products. Can I trust a title to be complete if I never read it before and have no way of missing important components. What else is being lost in the translation?!

Vintage Westlake Sci-fi Tale A Turkey

I have always loved Donald Westlake's books of all types. So I looked forward to this reading this one when I came across it in the kindle catalog. I wanted to read a sample of his early writing. Well, I read it. It was awful. Sophomoric humor at best. Give it a miss.
